Basil seed harvest question.
    #22097816 - 08/16/15 07:34 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

What is the best time to harvest the flower spikes to collect seed from basil?

I have some nice lime basil which is fully mature, tons of flower spikes, the flowers have dropped from the spikes and I am curious when I should harvest the spikes for seed.

Not to sound rude, but when they're ready.

I'll usually just give the stem a light shake, if any seeds fall out I know they're ready to go.
I try to wait until most of the stem and seed pods have browned and crisped up, I do all kinds of plants this way.
Not real sure if there's any master gardener techniques for it, just what I've always done.

You collect seeds when seed pods are completely brown.  Usually 4\5 oval seeds from every pod. Due the inflorescence being big, you easily get hundred of seeds.
