Ganoderma applanatum?
    #21985536 - 07/23/15 03:14 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Found on an oak tree. If this is the case which i really believe it is, the oak tree is doomed and a potential hazard especially during peak 'Cane season

Going to have to let it grow out a bit more. It is too young to be able to identify to species at least if it is something like Ganoderma, there are numerous other species that start out as blobs like this as well.

how long do you think that will take?  a part of the bracket is visible on the top right of the larger blob.

It's not anymore a potential hazard (I can only assume you mean that the tree may fall or something) than any other tree until it dies, which could take years. It's infected with a pathogen but it's a very slow process to kill the tree. If you're just seeing the brackets now, the tree has already been infected for quite some time. It's sad to see the oak go, but it'll still be around for a while.

A couple weeks will produce some more growth. Polypores and Ganoderma in particular can be a very slow growing type of fungi and the fruit bodies can stick around for years in some cases.

to your first reply - this is what i have read. the oak will still be around, but the roots are likely infected and this will with time undermine the tree's structural integrity...

i'm willing to bet that it's more likely to fall over when another hurricane rips through our area... we had three decent ones over ten years ago come in the same year which knocked over many older trees that had no signs of this parasite.

the oak you are seeing this on is pretty healthy for the most part, but it sure will be sad considering it's one of the oldest in the neighborhood

are other trees nearby at risk of contracting this infection?

Other trees are at risk for infection if they have damage (exposed wood). If you have to trim any branches off healthy trees nearby you need to cover/paint the exposed areas to be proactive.

Tree pathogens are another one of nature's many ways off culling the weak.

This one is a better shot of the op

These two are from another oak, orange top i guess with a brown poly pore underneath

This is from just around the corner on yet another oak

It would seem that many trees in this neighborhood are infected, there are at least 5 or 6 i counted on my walk today

Go scrape the bottom of the OP wait a few seconds and see if it turns dark. Take a few photos and pick the one that is focused the best.

The second may be a Phellinus species from what I can see, which isn't much. Take a few focused, well lit shots and pick the best to post.

The last is a Ganoderma, which species I won't guess at that stage of development.
