seriously. i almost never hear people talk about this band. and when i do, its always "Carry on wayward son".
wtf? Kansas is by far the most epic christian rock band ever, and easily one of the top 10 progressive rock bands.EVER. they are like a mix of RUSH, Classical, and Christian
Miracles out of Nowhere :
Closet Chronicles(about Howard Hughes) :
Nobody's Home (about the second coming of Jesus)
Cheyenne Anthem (about First Nations) :
Even Pink Floyd turned one of their songs into an entire album, 6 years later.
what do you guys think? anyone ever been to one of their concerts? because they are fucking amazing live, very skilled with their instruments
or is it just me who thinks they are fucking epic??

Haven't listened to them in a really long time but I'm about to listen to Leftoverture. I'll let you know what I think; haven't heard it since I was like 14 and obsessed with anything prog.

i pretty much agree, but John Bonham was on his level in style, imo
Still, Kansas is the shit.
Early in the morning sunlight Soaring on the wings of dawn Here I'll live and die with my wings in the sky And I won't come down no more
Higher than a bird I'm flying Crimson skies of ice and fire Borne on wings of steel I have so much to feel And I won't come down no more
Sail on, sail on, I will rise each day to meet the dawn So high, so high I've climbed the mountains of the sky Without my wings you know I'd surely die I found my freedom flyin' high I've climbed the mountains of the sky
Floating on a cloud of amber Searching for the rainbow's end Earth so far below me, I'm here alone, free I can't come down no more

I've been a Kansas fan for some time now, but I've never seen them live before. Check out their "Song for America" if you get the chance. I think it's their very best tune.

Dunno where you live, but they play in the NE united states, especially in PA and OH all the time. they play within 75 miles of Pittsburgh basically every tour
its worth it. will blow your mind, even though its not the original lineup. Kansas really prides themselves on musicianship

That album was pretty good, didn't blow me away but I'd probably listen again. If I hadn't heard "Carry On Wayward Son" a million times I'd probably really like it; it's a really well written song.
Are they really a Christian rock band?

They didn't start out that way, but the lead guy later went into the Christian/rock scene.

Yeah. I was wondering about that. They certainly didn't make a deal of it when they came out in the seventies. Then again I wasn't all that impressed anyway. They were OK.

I went to Jardine junior high and Topeka West senior high with several of the band members. They used to practice in Kerry Livgren's garage, just across the street from my parent's house, and most people thought they would never be famous. It's been nice watching local boys get national attention. Their songs get played often in commercials and I think about how much their music enriched my life. Phil Ehart's dad was in the military and I will always remember Phil's butch-waxed flat top hair cut when everybody else wanted hair like the Beatles. I think Kerry still lives in the Topeka area, somewhere around Shawnee Lake. Thanks for many pleasant hours spent tripping out to your music, guys!

I liked Kansas live. They played a decent show. I actually really liked the keyboard player whatever his name is.

Keyboards & vocals are Steve Walsh. Agree, they are awesome. I caught a live show recently at a small theater, They are still as good as ever, although I wish Livgren was still in.

I think the Kansas band now is more like a cover band. I used the leftoverture album cover to clean my weed in the late seventies. They have a song called "The Wall" that is actually my favorite song.
Pretty sure Kerry and Steve are no longer with the band. I think Kerry was "born again" sometime in the 80's. It's a shame though...they wrote some amazing music.

I saw Kansas at the Indiana State Fair in 1977. They are playing there again this year, 38 years later. I am not going, been there, done that.
