Yeah and the Mahabharata depicts a thermonuclear war in India predating Mesopotamia by tens of thousands of years. I just have to wonder how the entire field of anthropology/archaeology, going in high gear for over 100 years, never stumbled across this stuff. I mean, wouldn't an advanced civilization leave a lot of non-biodegradable stuff? It makes no sense to me how it could remain so hidden from everybody.

There are always those spacio-temporal anomalies like ax-heads and spark plugs embedded in Pre-Cambrian coal, hundreds of millions of years old. Really? "What is Reality?"

Look into Graham Hancocks work. There is more and more evidence being found that suggests a lost, advanced civilization existed. Maybe several. History is being re-written and mainstream academia are trying to fight it tooth and nail.

This theory has nothing to do with the Annunaki or "Ancient Aliens", the theory simply suggests that an advanced civilization(s) existed (how advanced is open to speculation) which was wiped out by a global cataclysm, and the survivors migrated and started over from scratch. This is backed by a plethora of archaeological and geological evidence, aswell as the study of ancient texts & myths.
Over the past 8 - 10 years, a group of highly credentialed researchers including Archaeologists, Senior Scientists, Geologists, Geo-physicists, and Nuclear Chemists have been begun to unearth irrefutable evidence that our earth was hit by a series of asteroid fragments roughly 12,800 years ago, resulting in further cataclysms (earthquakes, flooding, etc) up until 11,600 years ago. Very recent in the grand scheme of things. The evidence includes the study of ancient shore lines, core samples, and the discovery of nano-diamonds and melt glass (similar to what is found at nuclear test sites) covering an area of 50 million square kilometers across 4 different continents. These nano-diamonds are formed under immense pressure and heat exceeding 2500 degrees centigrade.
These impacts, thought to be roughly 1 - 2km fragments of a comet 100km+ accross, hit different areas around the globe. Impacts pulverized giant ice sheets in North America (North America was under 2 - 3km of ice at this time) causing global flooding of an unimaginable scale, ejecting dust clouds into the atmosphere which blocked out the suns rays for close to 1000 years, and threw the earth back into a deep freeze known as the Younger Dryas. This resulted in a decimation of species (close to 70% of all species at the time) and brought humans close to the brink of extinction.
Recently an archaeological site was unearthed in Turkey called "Gobekli Tepe". This site is single handedly re-writing our history books, specifically because at the time it was constructed, according to the current mainstream timeline, no civilizations existed, and humans were mindless hunter/gatherers incapable of sophisticated construction. The construction of Gobekli Tepe has been dated at 11,600 years ago - this timeline is very important for 2 reasons. 11,600 years ago is exactly the time that the Cataclysmic age of the Younger Dryas (mentioned above) ended. This is also the date range that Plato (Greek Philosopher) gives for the submergence and subsequent destruction of the city of Atlantis:
“Afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea.” Plato - Timaeus et Critias.
There are over 500 ancient texts from around the world that speak of a cataclysm just like this, with an identical timeline. These include texts such as Deucalion, Xisuthrus, Utnapishtim, Manu, The Epic of Gilgamesh, Plato (as above) and of course, Noah's Flood from the Bible.
On a related note, the discovery of Gobekli Tepe also lends credence to the theory presented by Boston University Geologist Robert Schoch & Egyptologist John Anthony West, that the Egyptian Sphinx is much, much older than mainstream archaeology once thought. This is due to water erosion marks on the walls of the enclosure of the Great Sphinx, weathering that is evident of prolonged and extensive tropical rainfall in the Nile Valley and Giza Plateau. The last time this area experienced significant rainfall was over 10,000 years ago.
Since the discovery of Gobekli Tepe, mainstream academia can no longer dispute the suggestion that the Sphinx, and the Pyramids by proxy, could be 12,000+ years old, perhaps constructed or re-furbished by the survivors of a lost, advanced civilization decimated by events that completely changed the course of mankind.
These are just a few points of evidence that I think are fascinating. Of course there is a lot more if you're interested.
I've always had an interest in Ancient History and Archaeology and spend a great deal of my spare time studying this subject. Graham Hancock is one of the pioneers at the forefront of this research. Mainstream academics fight the theory because they've built their careers around a specific timeline. This is not pseudo-science, the evidence is very real and is truly fascinating, I recommend looking into it if it's something that interests you.

I have that book on my wishlist I've heard good things.
I'm currently reading fingerprints again before magicians of the gods comes out.
If you're not familiar with the geologist Randall Carlson, you should check some of his stuff out too. He recently traveled with Graham and made some amazing contributions to the new book.
