new processors + 64 bit computing
    #2169012 - 12/08/03 12:44 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

debating on different computer types to pick and the only thing that's stopping me from settling on a high-end Athlon is that they have new 64-bit ones for much more $$$.

will the strength difference be enough to justify the higher price, particularly when 64-bit Windows XP comes out?

i'm of the opinion that if your gonna buy a new comp then go 64 bit... AMD. hell, even running 32 bit code it still performs as well as or better than a P4. intel keeps pushing the clock while AMD is pushing the envelope. me, i don't have the $$$ and i'll be hanging onto my lowly system for as long as i can. when the time comes 64 bit will be the only choice.

Well I tried writing a nice long reasoning about how i think that currently decideing on either dosnt seem like such a good idea, but cant seem to put it into words that read accuratly the way I feel other then to just say, I dont think that going with either for a home system is a good idea at this time.

Getting the high end 32-bit just dosnt seem to make much sense right now with 64-bit stuff comming mainstream real soon or going with 64-bit before it gets its chance to mature.

Personally if I dont get to buy the apple soon, I'd be waiting 6 mo. to put together a new clone.

i don't really see the downside to investing in 64 bit. the price point is roughly the same. the performance with 32 bit code is comparable. 64 bit code is certainly on the way. the only catch is that when 64bit gets big you'd be stuck with a lesser 64bit machine. in this day and age there is no good time to buy a comp. there's always a killer tech coming down the pike that could keep you waiting forever. i mean, i'd really like to get in on hypertransport when it hits, and pci express, and ...

it does, however, seem to be a good time to get a mac if that's your thing.

the good thing about linux is that it is, by nature, designed for the cutting edge as developers can't ever quite catch the bleeding one.
