Obsessionality test...
    #2150032 - 12/01/03 05:03 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

My shrink gave me an Obsessionality test today...
Try this exercise...
Close your eyes and try to think of Camels (or some
object of your choice) continuously...
see how long u can do this without completely forgetting
about Camels (obviously u'll only realize that u've
forgotten to think about it after the fact)...
Post your results here.

Just curious about "why". What's the point? I mean, without even doing it, I know I'm going to stop thinking about a camel and find myself thinking about other things.

I ended up exhausting my shrink
apparently most people can't focus for more than
a minute or so...
I kept going for over 5 minutes so she had to intervene...
she said she's never encountered someone who could do
that (which is quite disturbing cause I guess that means
I'm extreemely Obsessive).
But she said it probably was because I've been practicing
meditation for so long (but I think she was just trying to
alleviate my concern by saying something positive).

Lucid,

To be able to hold an image/thought for allong time without being distracted should be considered a positive not a negative. Because you can do this, is what makes you different from the norm. Look how she said that all the others could only hold an image for a minute or so. Most don't try, is also a reason. The majority of people let their thoughts run all over the place. A few can hold an image for allong time. That is the trick to dreaming. To be able to hold a dream together without it dissolving away. How Lucid are your Dreams, Lucid???

So I lay back, and think about camels.

Two hours later, I wake up from a refreshing nap.

Thanks, camels!

So there's this joke about this army guy stationed out in the dessert. After a week he says to the Arab, hey where can a guy get some ass around this godforsaken oasis and the guy points to his camel. The army guy says nah, thanks anyway. Next week. Two weeks without sex, he asks the guy again where he can get some pussy and the guy points to his camel. Another week, and the guy asks again, and the guys points to his camel, and the army guys says, alright and goes up to it and starts to fuck it in the ass. The Arab says hey what the fuck are you doing to my camel, I mean to ride it into town!

How about the picture of the camel on the pack of Camel cigerettes? There's a naked guy standing in the back legs of the camel, with an erection. There's supposed to be a girl on her hands and knees in front of him, but I've never been able to see that picture.

Yes there is a sort of test...

When he said camels originally did you think of the animal first or the cigerettes?

I thought of the cigerettes.

Very lucid...sometimes TOO Lucid :frown:
I have lots of nightmares since I got depressed about 9 months
ago, so it sucks that I even remember my dreams...
Interestingly, I have trouble concentrating on
complicated tasks (such as programming - which is my profession)...
I wish I could use my ability to obsess/focus to my
advantage by applying it to my work...
I think complicated tasks require an ability to focus, and then
let go and move on. I guess I'm lacking the latter part...
I can focus on one thing, but then letting it go and moving on
is hard...

There's your attachment-during-meditation theme again.

I would take a good look at your shrink because that test is flawed. Like medicinebag said, being able to focus on one thing for a long time is a *good* thing. But like you said, you need to also have the ability to let go. Or in the words of this martial arts book I read, "Sever the edge between before and after." And do it continuously so that you stay in the present moment as much as possible.
