Slime Molds: Contamination or Decontaminator?
    #21407445 - 03/14/15 03:14 PM (9 years, 17 days ago)

I have been reading up on slime molds and I have 2 that I am keeping in jars and feeding yeast, malted milk and leftover chunks of nutrient agar. My question is what would happen if one was introduced into a contaminated agar plate had mycelium growing on it? Would it kill the new mycelium or just use up the nutrients in the medium? Is it possible that it would kill contamination but leave the mycelium be?

No thoughts on this subject? Should I run a test with agar plates?

I have no clue how the slime mold would react with mycelium and contaminant molds. Give it a try, I suppose.

By the way, slime molds love oats. I've had a few pet slimers myself over the years. :awesomenod:

Yeah I have one right now that I've been feeding yeast and leftover bits of nutrient agar.

If you put it in a big container it'll have room to move around.

Honestly, oats are it's "favorite" food. Give it a try.

That's one of my favorite species, and also the most commonly found, Fuligo septica, or more commonly known as "dog vomit slime mold".

I'll try that since it's taking up the whole jar at this point 's funny because I just remembered the agar is an oatmeal based recipe and it loves it lol....Also I thought it was Physarum polycephalum but idk, both species look really similar to me honestly.

It could be Physarum polycephalum. It looks nearly identical to Fuligo septica.
