Pre Third Grow Stomach Butterflies
    #21397078 - 03/12/15 11:05 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Okay so my first grow went great for a first grow. Out of twenty five jars, I ended up birthing 13. All had great flushes. My second grow, however, was an absolute disaster. Not entirely sure why I lost every single one but one jar, but I've narrowed it down to a few things I did wrong on my second grow.

1. I did not put tin foil lids over the top of the lids in my jars before steam sterilization. (I'm pretty sure this is probably the one that sunk me.)
2. I used a butane lighter. But I did that on my first grow to and managed to keep more than half my jars. I'm skeptical about how much of a difference this made.
3. Both times I used the regular shoulderless half pint jars instead of the super wide mouth ones. I'm suspecting this probably increased colonization time and therefore made it more susceptible to contams.
4. I may have turned the stove down a little too far after the water reached a full boil. I was thinking about just going out and buying a huge pot for PF Tek so that I can just stack all the jars up really high off the bottom in it and then I can put a ton of water in it so I can just leave at a full boil for the full 90 minutes.
5. I did not let the jars cool overnight after sterilization on the last grow. I'm assuming this may have been another one that sunk me.

I'd appreciate anyone's comments on any of these to tell me how correct I am and to verify which one may have had the biggest impact on the 18 brown rice flour jar contaminations I had on my last grow, so I absolutely never forget to do those steps again. Thanks guys.

sounds like most of your trouble came from your steam sterilization... you should go buy a pressure cooker  you don't even need a fancy one. A 35$ pc from walmart works fine.

also, yes you need foil over your jars if you're boiling or pcing. dont skip that step!

a bic lighter is fine. I've used them many times.

Instead of going out and buying a $30 pot for steam sterilizing, go buy a pressure cooker. You're welcome.

:whathesaid:

Have you seen let's grow mushrooms? I'd recommend..

Did you have a dry verm layer on top (I'm assuming this if PF tek?)

As ganj said, go buy a PC it'll save you substrate material costs and lots of time, it's a no brainer

Normally you put foil on the lids to maintain a good moisture content in you jars, then take it off after sterilization so your dry verm layer can dry. If you didn't maintain the right temp for the whole cycle then the jars might not have been sterilized in the first place. Using a lighter is OK as long as the needle was red hot. If you didn't wait for your jars to cool then the spores wouldn't survive.

My 23 quart holds 7 quart jars and about 14 pasty agar plates.

I thought the foil was too keep the dry verm layer dry by not allowing water to drip in on it? If it wet after sterilization & then had to be dried out, it seems it could wick contaminants in as soon as you remove the foil.... I don't think it is supposed to get wet, then dry out. But I could be wrong????  ...

You can fit 3 more on top for a total of 10 quarts

No, you are absolutely correct FreeWorldOrder. The tin foil is to keep all the moisture out of your jars. You don't not want your dry verm layer getting wet.

Good stuff. Thanks guys, also, I'm wondering if real micro pore tape will get wet during steam sterilization even with the tin foil on. I'm using some sort of medical tape, but on my first grow I used tin foil on the lids, and it seemed like the tape I used was damp anyway (maybe condensation? I dunno.). But I have a feeling damp tape after sterilization could be inviting contaminations as well.

Once your jars are done in the steam pot and cool, load them into your SAB and remove the foil. If there is any condensation on the lids/filter/etc, just wipe it off with a alcohol infused paper towel and let it air dry in your SAB.
