A Question of Mycelium
    #2123783 - 11/19/03 08:06 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

First off I'd like to thank everyone out there who has helped me along the way. I've just gotten my very first pins today and it wouldn't have been possible without this forum.

That said, I do have a question. A little more than a week ago I decided, in my excitement of a first time grow, that I would inoculate 13 one-pint jars of Verm and BRF with live mycelium from a fully colonized cake I had just birthed. Today I checked the jars out (I hadn't been checking them every day because...well, I had almost forgotten about them in the excitement of my casings) and they all will be fully colonized in a few days (thanks to Little Kussh and Magash for that one).

My question is: How long can the jars sit without being adversely affected? I would like to birth them around the middle of January if that would be possible...so would it be possible?

Thanks for any help, as always.

put them in a ziplock bag and toss them in the fridge untill you are ready to use them

Can I just tape over the inoculation holes rather than putting a plastic bag over each jar?

And about how long do you think they'll keep before invitro pinning starts?

the time it will take for them to pin is all dependant on temperature and light. give them as little light as possible. im not sure about putting them in the fridge, im sure automan might know better than me due to his personal experience, but my knowledge is that a cold shock will trigger pinning.

a cold shock will trigger pinning but a cold shock is for 24 hrs not any real length of time. I've heard that live mycelia will live for months in a fridge. It slows the growth rate down to almost a dormant state per say.
