todays hunt (no pics, sorry)
    #2121127 - 11/18/03 09:14 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

My camera ran out of batteries and I can't find the charger, so no pics.

Went hunting in a nearby park, and found some LBMs in a couple spots; both woodchip mulch beds. Took 'em home to print, and all the prints came out black. I've IDed them as Panaeolus Foenescii (sp). My IDing skills are off, but the black print and a striking resemblance to this mushroom:

Give me the distinct impression that it is, indeed, a haymaker's mushroom. I could be wrong, since some didn't have the pale center at the top of the cap. Would that indicate another species? Either way I'm sure it's not active.

Also, I found a few Galerina Marginatas in the same area. All in all, had a fun educational experience.

Also, I'm thinking of a trip to the Oregon coast soon. Would I be better off in Astoria, or would the Tillamook area be fine?

OK, if I can convince my friend to drive there, I'm gonna go find me some azures!!

I was excited that I might have found some subbalteus, but then I looked at the stems and realized, to my dismay, they were not.

What other LBMs grow in woodchips and have a black print?

yes, velvety psathyrella can occurr in areas with wood chips and had a black sporeprint. but panaeolus subbaltaetus cannot, unless there is straw and/or dung present, ive only encountered this once in a tim hortons flower bed.
look in stable shaving heaps for pan sub, look all in and around weeds growing from the heap

Can you provide me with a pic of one of them velvety psathyrellas?

I'm not especially looking for Pan Subs, mainly cyans.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure of my ID. Also, there's no reason to keep these around, is there? I'm gonna throw 'em on the compost heap in the morning unless anyone says otherwise.

Well I'm looking in the same park today for some actives. Yesterday I found a few hundred more Pan. Foensecii, and another galerina. Would Ps. Cyanescens be more likely to be found under the shelter of bushes and shrubs, or in between the plants and uncovered?

oh yes, and that pic of paneolina foenisecci is uber-gay
i mean look, buddy goes and sets them with pretty flowers and makes them all stylish. those flowers all occur relitively high off of the ground,
its almost as bad as picking many libs, then putting them all in a cluster like they were growing that way.
or like that guy a few years back who stuck some amanitas in a styrafoam cup with dirt and tried to show off his awesome harvest of homegrown cubies

Well, today I found, once again, many more foensecii and galerinas. Also, I found a couple small, thick stemmed mushrooms which were too rotten for identification.
