How's it going guys. I'm Horgar. I live in the south coast in California. I'm looking to get some helpfull tips on what kind of soil mixture would be ideal for my San Pedro's and bridgesii cacti. When I bought them I noticed The San pedros roots were coming out of pots and I like want to transplant them ASAP don't like to see them root bound. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just search cactus soil on here, there are 4,000 results. Keep its simple, and use something for good aeration, like perlite.

You should post in The Ethnobotanical Garden. You will get better results.
but, since u are here now, i would do normal potting soil mixed with perlite. Say, a 1:4 ratio, 1 part perlite to 4 parts soil.

Definitely post this in the EG. But what I use is a mix of about 2 part soil, 1.5 part sand, and 1 part perlite. They arent too too picky, as long as you have good drainage. I might tend to be a little heavier on the sand and perlite than some, but it works for me...
This is just what I started using when I first got myself some cacti, and just kept with it. If someone like karode, mostly harmless, or lsoares says something otherwise over at the EG, I defer to their advice

This thread was moved from The Psychedelic Experience.
Reason: Your question is a better fit for the Ethnobotanical Garden forum as it pertains to growing plants.

with san pedro, you could use just store bought cacti soil mix, just sift out the large peices of bark out of it.

Is that for generic brand caci soil or do the name-brand stuff have it too?

i have excellent results with the soil mixture shown in my sig. if all else fails, store bought cactus soil mixed with perlite works great. use a 1:1 mixture. invest in some schultz cacti fertilizer, it works extremely well and is cheap.
i have found that fertilome brand cactus soil has very few sticks in it, miracle gro has more but it isnt hard to sift them out.

I can not believe nobody has suggested the standard mix for south american cacti lol
50% pumice 25% organic matter (worm castings with coir 50:50 is my preference) 25% coarse sharp sand
These percentages are not set in stone and a quality potting soil such as Fox Farm Ocean Forest or Black Gold Potting Mix can be used in place of organic matter.
If you can only obtain fine sharp sand then i do not suggest using more than 10% of the total blend due to compaction issues. I learnt this the hard way with my carob seedlings.
Perlite floats, breaks apart, is un-natural, and typically pretty bad for the environment. Trust me pumice is far superior for cacti even though its so expensive and hard to find. It even makes a great mulching because it doesnt wash away or float like perlite.
I hate to hate but perlite is just a half-a$#%d substitute for pumice lol avoid at all costs

Just a small question, what counts as coarse sand?
Where I live the coarse sand is of size 0.2-1.0 mm and fine sand of size 0.1-0.7 mm.
Is size 0.2-1.0 mm coarse enough?

0.2mm-1.0mm would be considered coarse but not super coarse.
Heres a wikipedia citation:
"Sand grains are between gravel (with particles ranging from 2 mm up to 64 mm) and silt (particles smaller than 0.0625 mm down to 0.004 mm)."
I dont know if there is a specific size standard for coarse vs fine, maybe somebody who works in concrete or aggregates could shed some light on us. Lol but ive been told 1.0mm to 2.0mm is ideal for gardening purposes.

Thanks. Well I do not necessarily need the precise threshold on the size between fine and coarse. But there are so many here who use the term "coarse" sand but never really specify what that means. So I am just curious what is considered as coarse sand.
I think someone once said that the beach sand is too fine. Unfortunately, I have problem to get any notion from this.

Most beach sand is basically silt and easily smaller than 0.1mm in size.
To test sand simply fill a 1 gallon (or 1 liter) bucket with holes on the bottom, and water it generously until it drains out the bottom.
If the sand forms mud or it is difficult to stick your finger into the center 1-2" deep then it is considered fine and will not work. You can see and feel the sand become compact (like beach sand).
You can also try clumping the wet sand in your hands, if it forms a clump and sticks to itself then you have fine sand.
