when you roll it in the verm, should the verm be completely covering the cake or just here and there? i couldnt get the verm to completely cover my cakes, probably around 40-50% of it.

I usually stick my unopened jars in the fridge overnight, then the next day I dunk them in cool, sterile water and roll them in verm, pressing down slightly as I roll to help the verm stick. Then I put a little loose verm on top of the cake so it is completely covered. I'd say it should look like one of those ice cream bars with the nuts on it, you can still see the cake through the verm, but its mostly covered. I don't like the verm to be too thick on the cake though.

The Dunk and Roll Method:
1. Birth your fully colonised cake into a zip-lock bag then add water until cake is fully submerged.
2. Place in fridge for 24 hours.
3. Remove cake and roll in clean vermiculite.*
4. Fill a shallow lid with dry vermiculite and spray with water till nice and damp.
5. Place cake on vermiculite.
6. Add dry vermiculite to the top of the cake and mist the entire cake, vermiculite and all.
7. Place in terrarium and wait eight days on average for pins.
* To sterilize vermiculite put in microwave safe container (spread out evenly) for ten minutes, then stir and use. Also make sure to wet the vermiculite to target moisture before microwaving.

That was the response I got when I asked this question a month ago. I can't remember who gave it to me, but whoever it was, thanks.
I hope this helps.

It holds more water to the cake so you get a bigger yield. PF cakes are limited by water content, so do dunk and roll to crank the wet stuff. I noted when I rolled cakes they'd get rhizomorphic mycelium relief out off the cake. The fruiting was better. Edit. The cake in left back ground with tin foil ball in the tray grew to this. You can see same tin foil ball in pic.
