Merry Xmas everyone! I'm looking to finally purchase some music production software but I'm new to this so I'm looking for something relatively easy but with a lot of capabilities. Is there any programs you guys could recommend?
Thanks so much!!

If you have a Mac, I'd recommend in this order: -Logic Pro X (fairly cheap compared to other DAWs at 200, and high quality) -Ableton Live (expensive but many capabilities, and the ability to perform live with midi controllers and what not)
Other DAW's to check out: Fruity Loops, Cubase, Reason by Propellerhead, Studio 1... Do some google searches with "best daw 2014" or something like that.

I heard fruity loops is pretty easy to use for beginners like colors stated above I'm also in the market for music software too. What type of music are you looking into creating? I'd like to do underground hip hop types of beats but I'm also working on getting vinyl turntables also.

Try out several and see which ones mesh well with you. I use both SONAR X3 and FL Studio 11.

I highly recommend reason. I think the newest one even has recording capabilities from line sources. Easy to use program with endless possibilities. The rack view is cool because you can route your effects, and what not, virtually how you would with hardware.
I use reason for sequencing beats and synthesizers, or putting together quick ideas. Then I use pro tools 11 to record vocals, guitars, bass, etc, and finally mixdown

thanks for all the replies. im going off memory here, but I wanna answer each of your questions
the type of music id like to get into making is more trip-hop/downtempo'ish.
someone else mentioned to try the programs out n see what I like n go from there. how do u try out these programs for free????
also eyeni, that sounds cool. thanks for letting me know that. ive heard reason is good. def seems to be the one im leaning towards most now.
my other question, being that I have to get a new laptop, is there something basic you could recommend that would go with either say reason, or fruity loops. can I just get a whatever Samsung laptop running on windows and not have to worry about storage capabilities and what not?
thanks guys

Hey mad scientist,
For the purposes of reason or fruity loops a standard minimum 4 gb ram would be sufficient. As for memory I recommend atleast 500gb because if you build up a sample collection it will take up space quick. I like lenovos and asus if you're trying to stay cheap. You can run pro tools n it just not with high track counts or a lot of high cpu plugins.
I actually have a Lenovo 4 gb with reason and a nectar 25key midi controller, I use this for when I'm hanging in the living room Or out and about. This combination was $500
I also have a sweet full home studio...not to brag or anything
As for where to sample the software, I believe on their website they have free trials. If not, torrents are your friend for the software as well as 100's of gigabytes of samples.
Feel free to PM me with anything I can help. I'm willing to mail you a copy of reason, and samples if you have no other option.

I use Reason as well, and I love it. I have version 8 and it has recording built in. I used to use pro tools 9 HD in conjunction with Reason 5 in a uni studio, but now I'm traveling and have Reason 8 for everything. It's awesome having just one program now instead running Reason through protools, and now I can use all the awesome Reason effects for vocals and guitar. I have a zoom TAC-2 as the audio interface, a midi keyboard and am going to buy an AKG 414 mic.

Sounds great Jufin! That akg 414 is a nice versatile Mic in a good price range. You can do a lot of stuff from vocals to guitars, congas, and I've see them used as overheads on a drum kit from time to time.
Cool stuff man!

Hey Jufin I'm in the U.S. in Florida
I'm using an Apollo quad for interface, an exaggeration of a computer I custom built, pro tools 11, and reason 5. I use waves, fab filters, and a lot of other plugins for mixdown.
A few pieces of outboard gear including focus rite preamps, and some effects processors.
For monitors I have Yamaha hs5m's (mostly for mixing), Yamaha hs80m's for bumping a track, a Yamaha hs8s sub for checking lows, and a single aura tone mix cube for checking in mono.
And then I got a bunch of guitars and bass and an electronic drum kit that I trigger drum plugins with!
I have a sweet mic collection too, plus dj gear. Lots of toys

Sounds like a mean setup. Some of those waves plugins are awesome. I need to hire a studio with monitors to do some mixing as headphones and various different stereos just don't cut it. You definitely need a sub for a good bottom end. I really want to get an electronic kit to trigger Reason drum synths, I play them on the keyboard and even that is pretty awesome. How are your mixing skills?

Hell yea midi drums are awesome to a guy like me because I can play a beat on my electronic kit and if anything is off, I can adjust it as far as velocity, and timing. not to mention the samples are super clean.
My mixing skills are getting better all the time it's become my favorite part of the creative process. And I mix down stuff for other people too.
I'll pm you if that's cool and maybe check out some of your stuff as well as share mine!

Thanks for that, you should dive into yourself. To put it in perspective, I started using Reason and Protools a year and a half ago. I have made music for a long time but not with a good setup like that.
