Drills for shiitake log prep

I recently took a shiitake farming workshop and the drills they were using were actually modified angle grinders (fitted with a drill chuck). They sold these for ~$200 (which I thought was fair), but the guy that modded the grinders for them had "disappeared from the face of the earth". I'm anxious to get my tools together to start year 1 of shiitake cultivation but a high-torque/high rpm drill for <$300 hasn't come my way. Any suggestions/sources? BTW, either a right-angle drill and/or a drill with a perpendicular hand grip (left/right interchangeable) is preferred.

I'd have to say that cordless isn't a viable option. i'm going to need far more uptime not too mention torque. I checked out lowe's today and they don't really have what I'm looking for but I did investigate fitting a drill chuck onto an angle grinder. Seems the only obstacle is finding a chuck that can spin 10,000rpm and not cost >$100

I would say if you are willing to pay 300$ for a drill that an 18volt DeWalt cordless would be the way to go. They come with two batteries, and have more than enough torque for drilling into some logs.

Can't go wrong with just a regular 10000 rpm Milwaukie drill. Any drill will werk.

I have a DeWalt 18 volt cordless. This drill alonf with a sharp bit is all the home grower should ever need. However, if you need to do hundreds of logs I would get an electric high speed drill.

If you have a compressor, air drills might be the way to go:

"Some logs" is the key phrase. I'm looking at 1,000 logs with ~30 holes per log. I want to accomplish this in 1-1.5 days in as quick a fashion as possible. Cordless may offer enough inital torque but would be lacking in consistent uptime.

I did a cursory google for 10,000rpm Milwaukee drills and came up empty handed. Can you provide links or model #'s?
BTW, I'm working with a Hilti tool rep to get a modified angle grinder made to my spec. Looks like it is going to cost ~$200. That includes a 5 year warranty.

1,000 logs in 1 to 1 1/2 days? Do you mean drilled and plugged? I hope you have friends.
Have you seen this http://www.mushroompeople.com/cat2000/frames.html

>1,000 logs in 1 to 1 1/2 days?
One hole: drilling, plugging and sealing with wax all together 10 seconds, if you are fast. The time for handling the log is left out.
1000 logs x 30 holes/log x 10 sec/hole = 300,000 seconds = 83 hours.

Do you have a home depot where you are? they have many, many tools. Air would be sweet, but it costs a few bux fer start up.
http://www.powertoolservices.com/drills.htm
the 3/8's drill is a 10000rpm.

the workshop i mentioned in my original post was offered by Mushroompeople and the guy who did the mods who disappeared made those modded makita's which MushroomPeople no longer carry despite their website listings.
as for 83 hours... good point, silly me for not doing a logical calculation of timre required, this will be important for scheduling purposes (obviously).

the 3/8's drill is a 10000rpm.
quote from the site:
Quote:
This Heavy-Duty Magnum drill is built for Industrial/Construction applications. It features raw power with a Milwaukee built 5.5 amp motor, 0-2800 rpm trigger speed control, reversing. An exclusive feature is the brush cartridge system, with a set of spare brushes, that allows you to change brushes in less than one minute. Use this tool with a variety of accessories to drill into wood, metal, plastics and composites. The keyless chuck makes accessory changes quick and easy.
still not seeing 10Krpm but am seriously considering air power as I've considered getting other compressor powered tools in the past. my motto is to never pass up a chance to buy a new, useful tool!

Milwaukee 1/2 In. Heavy Duty Hole Shooter Right Angle Drill Home Depot has it for $229.00 and the Link will give you prices from other places Makita Angle Drills If you have any mechanical ability, you can just buy a replacement chuck for a drill and fit it over the shaft on a grinder. its not very hard

My mechanical ability does not yet include returning threads on grinder spindles and/or drill chucks. The threads for the two instruments are world's apart with one being a bit wider and with far more coarse threads. At the moment the only obstacle is finding a chuck threaded to match an angle grinder spindle (7/8"dia with 8 threads per inch). Air powered tools are becoming a more attractive option.

new right angle drill for $109.00 I don't think 10000 rpm is all that necessary for core drilling, more torque than anything will do the job. if I was doing a lot of hole driling a right angle drill is something I'd get. buy the best bit you can afford too.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=34211
they also had a cheap set up to convert a reg drill to a right angle set up.
