Cubies are easy so what should he try next just for some variety
will be looking for a fungus that is
1 not all that hard to grow
2 flushes decently
3 has as good as cubie magic content or better
4 will flush indoors
any suggestions?
pan subb seems to look good at this point
what about Gymnopilus aeruginosus ?

Try the p. mexicana. It is somewhat easy to grow. The potency is comparable to cubes. It will flush indoors. The only criteria is doesn't meet is the decent flush. It isn't as good in that department, but even if you fuck up fruiting you will get some sclerotia.
I don't have any experience with it, but here is some good reading:

the first one is sclerotia specific
the second one has tons and tons of information about everything

hope that helps the search

I would recommend Panaeolus (Copelandia) cyanescens. They require almost the same environmental conditions as cubensis, however they are much more potent. Flushes aren't going to be as big weight-wise, but, they have much more of a "kick" to them.

I find them to be a great next step for someone who would like to experiment with another species.

Check the FAQ for more information on substrate etc...
