air exchange during incubation
    #2052990 - 10/29/03 05:03 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I only keep the lids of inoculating jars loose during incubation but I'm not sure is this the best way for air exchange. Is using a cofee filter and foil without lid a better way or what's the easiest best way could you tell me please?Thanx.(Another thing is the incubator;how to provide air exchange in an incubator full of 40 jars, because they breathe like 40 elephants in a small room?)

Innoc holes in jar lids have always worked ok here for adequate air exchange. If you need more try some tyvek closed off by the jar ring. It will give mad air exchange -- maybe too much if not controlled.

specially jars need exchange after %60 colo.if you full your jars in normal conditions(3/4), this will let enough air for mycel to breath.you can seal the jars if you want.

I use the coffee filter trick myself, it really improves things. Don't worry about air exchange in the first week of incubation. After about a week check your jars. If a jar show signs of growth, do the following...

1) Remove the ring that holds the lid on your jar. Becareful you don't lift the lid, (opening the jar is bad.)

2) Next remove the tape from a single injection hole.

3) Quickly place the coffee filter over the lid.

4) Replace the ring, and your all set.
-------------------------------------------------

As far as your fruiting chamber goes, just hand fan your cakes about 3 - 4 times a day. Not need to worry about contams, if the jars were finished before you birthed them. (You can try something more advanced after your first grow.)

just dont use tape over the holes...leave the foil lids on.my brf halfpints colonise in less than 2 weeks this way.
i also flip them after 1 week regardless of there progress.

what is the point of doing grain when you pf jars are easy, or newbie to yall, and works every time, i dont see the point of going through extra trouble and higher risk of contams for grains................. in other words. i guess im newbie, with lotsa shrooms
