Final Opinion on Polyfill for Spawn GE

I've seen numerous regulars weigh in on our debated materials for GE, such as Tyvek (Various grades), Micropore (single and double layer, standard and medical grades), and EZ-felt ... and even more cringe-worthy materials, such as coffee filters, band-aids, and worse.
I've seen dramatic approval for an obviously respectable choice - PTFE/Cellulose filter discs. I wouldn't cast this notion aside. The things are respectably approved of, and it's worth noting that if one is not on a budget, you'd be doing yourself and your mycological endeavors a favor to pick up a pack of them.
Is there any scientific support or criticism of using polyfill as a GE material? Many growers on here report decent results with tightly stuffed polyfill in their GE holes, and I know ironed polyfill has seen approval.
While I'll be picking up some SFD's, how reliable would our regulars, Trusted Cultivators, and experienced hands rate polyfill as a material for GE in grain jars?
My biggest fear with the concept of using polyfill thus is that the much-recommended shaking at 30-40% and/or before consolidation would likely slather grain all over the polyfill poking through to the inside. This may or may not increase contamination risks, depending on the conditions of the materials. Ironed polyfill sheets sidestep this issue, but that's not my exact concern.
Thanks, everyone.

Never used poly for ge. Don't like the idea. SFD is the way to go. Though i have used tyvek a lot and it's great.

I'm not a huge fan of the concept myself. Now, ironed polyfill may be viable if thick enough, dense enough, and silicone-glued into place. I'm still a skeptic, regardless.

all I have ever used is polyfil for GE on grain jars
if you can't get it to work there's something wrong with you not the material that has been proven able to work well for years now.

I can appreciate both of your responses, and I'd say you both have good points.

SFDs seem to be the standard, but polyfill works just fine and it literally takes a minute or two for me to make a lid.

It's worked so well for me for the last year that I see no reason to buy SFDs. Why bother with something that works every time. Id rather spend my money on more petri dishes etc...
most of our SABs are jerry rigged totes with holes cut using a hot tin can

I'm not as experienced as a lot of people here, but I've used polyfill stuffed super tight (I can pick up an empty jar by the polyfill) into 1/4" holes. Out of a couple hundred jars, I've tossed one of them away because of contamination. There's often a little grain sticking to the bottom of the polyfill after shaking, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I have used micro-pore, tyvek, and SFD's. They all work but SFD is more reliable. Filters, even SFD can fail so its important to not only choose your materials carefully but even more important to store them well. Grain jars should be kept in a place where spore load is going to be minimal. I keep mine in unmodified totes.
I know people IRL who used poly and while I never did, it did work for them. However they like many other people all eventually come around to the SFD eventually. Its just less messing around and they have a really long lifespan so the price is moot after a few years. I do feel that they are more reliable.

I'll switch to SFD when my poly stops working but I suspect that will be in another life time.
