A friend wants to "upgrade" to casing......but issues.....
    #2043556 - 10/26/03 12:55 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

My friend would like to upgrade to casings but he seems to have a constant problem of cakes going into pinning even if there not all the way colonized. He has even had one cake that had about a 10% area of red contam start to fruit. His experiences so far is that no matter what happens to the cake or whatever they pretty much still fruit......

Anyways, so his cakes start gettin pins on them and he ends up just fruiting them in his terrarium. He has 5 cakes that are inbetween there 1st, and 2nd flush goin on 3rd. He is wondering if he could use all them and maybe a few more cakes to do a big casing. Even if some cakes might be a little less nutriant filled then others (maybe picked once or twice before). Is this possible or is just using the cakes brand new the best / only way? He basically doesnt like having to worry about his cakes fallin over, and his one casing he has done so far just put out some monsterous fruits. At his current temprature his casings tend to take 2 weeks to finish up before they are ready to fruit, But this is in about 68-70 degree temprature....

What I wouldn't give for isolates that pinned EARLY *waits for pins*

If they are fruiting before colonization, it is because some condition required for fruiting, but not required for mycelia vegetative growth, is present.  If it is taking a longer-than-average time for your BRF jars to colonize, it is because the temperature is not correct, the water/drymatter ratio is not correct, or the BRF was compacted too tightly in the jars when they were loaded.  I think that if your jars are colonizing at the regular rate, but pinning before they complete colonization, you should stop playing with them and exposing them to light.  Total darkness is best, to avoid 'accidental' pinning.

As for your question, you can definatly do that.  Dunk the cakes in water/h2o2 to kill any spores that could have alighted upon the cakes, then crumble them in a bag (don't touch the actual mycelia with your hands), then case.  It really is best to keep them covered (higher co2), and at the ideal temperatures for mycelia vegetative growth (80F) until the mycelia comes thru. Patch case, then wait for a nice even mycelia layer, then drop the temps and add light. Good luck

I keep the jars in a dark closet and barely check on them (maybe once every 4 days). There is no problem with putting potentially weaker cakes in with stronger ones?

Only real risk is contamination.
