Whats cooler than knowing a famous person...
    #2042936 - 10/25/03 08:29 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

What is even cooler than saying you know someone who is famous is when somebody who is famous says that they know who you are! Heres the story...

For 10 days earlier this month we were in Cabo San Lucas on vacation. We chose that week so we could be there for Sammy Hagar?s birthday celebrations. He performs at his place there, the Cabo Wabo Cantina. And usually there ends up being other famous people hanging around that week also. This year was no exception. Along with getting to see Sammy play he had a guest bass player standing in with his band. None other than Michael Anthony of Van Halen. In fact, I saw Michael play 3 nights in a row. He was hanging out there all week and he would just get up on stage and play with whoever was performing at the time. It was pretty cool.

But, getting to the point of the story...when we informed my wifes Father that we were going down to see Sammy he said "Oh, he used to come play with me about 35 years ago." My wifes father has been a musician for about 45 years or so. He is an amazing guitarist and plays many other instruments as well. But he used to play at a club in California and a young Sammy Hagar used to come in and play with them.

So the night we saw Sammy play we stuck around after the show. The place kinda emptied out and Sammy and all the famous folks had retired to the VIP area upstairs where the general public can?t get to them. My wife got a cocktail napkin and wrote a note on it. We found a guy who was someone of importance and told him that Eddie K was her father and could he please get this note to Sammy. He seemed skeptical but said he?d do what he could. Here is the front of that note.

When the guy returned about 10 minutes later the skeptisism was gone. He handed the note back and said to us "Thats the real deal there!" It had the word OVER scribled on the bottom and here is the back side of the note.

After talking to the guy who took the note up it turns out that Sammy took a look at the note and immediately remembered my wifes father and he said "Oh, Davids got to see this!" So they passed it to David to read and sign also. Turns out that David Lauser, the regular drummer for Sammys band (The Waboritas) also used to go play with them in that club 30+ years before! Upon asking my wifes dad when we returned home he said, "Oh yeah, I remember Dave. Didn?t know he was playing with Sammy!"

So I thought it was pretty cool that my wifes dad was not just talking shit. These guys actually remembered him. And its cool to say you know someone famous but its much cooler for them to say that they know you!

Here is a picture of Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony playing that night. And the bald guy on the stairs behind them is the guy who delivered the note for us. Also, that David Lauser dude is on drums but Sammy is standing in front of him.

Yeah, that's cool. I did extra work in LA on a film George Harrison produced and he cast himself into a cameo role as a janitor. I was the only person who recognized him and I spent an hour talking to him about mainly his spirituality regarding Maharishi and the Hare Krishnas. Ironically about a year later he did some frontman stuff for the Natural Law party in England.  This is about my best brag on the subject.

Well get this. I lived next door to the lead singer of air-supply a while back. We used to go up to his gate all drunk in the night and sing to him over the intercom...its was great. One day one of his wolves escaped and attacked my dog. Well my dog was just fine and I didnt press charges. Thats my clame to fame.

Also, my dad was a building inspector for park city, utah. He was working up there for some plan that was going on, turns out it was one of jonny carsons condos. My dad told him how much of a fan I was (which I wasnt...I dont know why he said that) and he told him to drop my sometime next winter. Well we went, and I met jonny carson. Pretty fuckin weird if you think about it....
