I read this website about casing and and i was confused about what u do with the casing...i mean how does the casing get into the terarium? do u just put the container the casing was in inside the terrarium or what?

A casing is in a container of some sort. You make it in say a rubbermaid container and place this in your terrarium or whatever humid environmet you have setup.

I think you can take it out if you want without damaging the mycelial matt. The idea with a casing is to increase surface area, as well as provide a nutrient rich (casing) layer over the matt. Also increases h2o level.

the casing layer actually has no nutrient value.

Depends on what material you are using for the casing layer.

cut n pasted straight from the FAQ...

...What is "casing"?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The term "casing" as it is used in the mushroom cultivation is the method by which substrate (either PF style cakes or colonized grain) is crumbled into smaller pieces, and covered with a non -nutritive layer such as peat, vermiculite, coco coir and different mixtures with additives.

if it contains nutrients it's not a casing layer.

Casing layers are meant to be non-nutritive, because any nutritional value they contain throws open the flood gates of contamination. By using non-nutritive materials, we have greater control over contaminations by restricting them from a source of food.

Well you're not retarded because you had enough brains to just ask. Retarded would have been to step into it blindly. I have learned from watching my fiance and he's a pro...has probably read everything on this site and learning is alot of the fun. Enjoy what you're doing and listen to these pro's...they won't stear you wrong!
