Questionable sterility of spores
    #2042288 - 10/25/03 03:25 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Hi!

If this subject is addressed somewhere and I missed it, please point me in the right direction! I've been searching the hell out of this site and haven't been able to find any information (though it's probably due to gross incompetence...). I inherited a spore print about a year ago; it's on a piece of weigh paper in an envelope and there's no way in hell it's sterile. I don't want to contaminate my cultures from the get-go!...but I can't think of a way to sterilize the suckers without killing them. I know that many spores are heat-resistant and was wondering if I could flash-pasteurize them or something. Any suggestions would be most welcome! Thanks!

Start them on agar, then you will see if they are clean or not.

Spores are hardly ever 100.00% sterile, still they can often be used even for direct inoculations via a syringe.

Make multiple syringes and try it on multiple jars... once you get one working jar, you're in business.
