Extra precautions??
    #2030993 - 10/21/03 11:07 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Ok im really pissed because my friend had 12 out of 12 jars fail because of an off white contamination (i would assume). This contam has no noticable scent, so the jars all smell like mushies.

For next time, could the jars be sterilized for 2-3 hours instead of one? would this affect the content of the jars in a negative way?

-thanx guys

Another detail that would be helpful is a description of how you treat the PC and jars while cooling. . .and what kind of lids/verm seal/filter disks you may be using. When all jars fail in a batch, it tends to be incomplete sterilization, but what you describe sounds like a mold. Many times they are introduced during the cooling or innoculation stage. Not always, but some more information would help.
When you are having problems like this, be sure to include a jar that you do not innoculate with the others. Incubate it as normal. If all jars including that one fail, it really points the finger at sterilization/cooling.
