Growing mushrooms on firs?
    #2029613 - 10/21/03 05:29 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Hello,

here, where I live there are almost only firs ( softwood ) and therefore I would like to grow the mushrooms on this substrate.
I have heard that some strains of the oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus pulmonarius), the Enoki (Flammulina velutipes), the Brown-Gilled Woodlover (Hypholoma capnoides), Changing Pholiota (Kuehneromyces mutabilis) and the Honey mushroom (Armillariella mellea) are growing on firs ( Are there some other species ? ).
Has someone experience with growing mushrooms on firs or sawdust derived from firs ?

cheers,

ragadingks

I would say that you have a pretty good list of species that will work right there. Try a few of those, just like you would a hardwood sawdust. Let us know how it progresses.

From what I know, Flammulina velutipes definitely grows on coniferous trees.

Recently I have found some species of Brown-Gilled Woodlover (Hypholoma capnoides) and the Honey mushroom (Armillariella mellea) that were growing on firs. I will make some tests with them and let you know, but it will take some time.
If someone here has found mushrooms that where growing on firs (softwood), please let me know, I would like to trade for them ...

Cauliflower mushrooms (Sparassis crispa) grow at the base of firs not out of the trunk itself.

Many other mushrooms can be grown on firs besides those that occur there naturally. But the yields are smaller so it's not a suitable substrate for commercial cultivation.

I'd have to check Stamets GGMM, but I think that most of woodloving species featured in that book can be grown also on soft wood. All Pleurotus species, Pholiota nameko, F. velutipes, Hypholoma sublateritium, H. capnoides, Sparassis crispa and even Lentinus edodes.

There's an article at mushworld about using conifer sawdust, 20% ricebran, pine sawdust and whole rice as a substrate for cultivating Sparassis crispa.

It's well worth checking out and registration is free !

I went there to see the article, but i had no luck with the registration. Was able to register, but in spite of that I could not log in to the website. Do not know why ...

Could you possibly give an excerpt of the article here ? ( I know I ask for much ... )

Cultural Characteristics of Sparassis crispa

Writer: Ki Won Ban / Date :1999-08-01 / hits: 98
Ki Won Ban, Ji Yeon Kim, Jae Ouk Shim, Ji Yul Lee,
and Tae Soo Lee, Min Woong Lee

Abstract: This study was carried out to obtain the basic data for making fruiting body of Sparassis crispa in artificial conditions. The mycelia of Sparassis crispa grew favorably in the media of cornifer sawdust +20% ricebran and pine sawdust+rice medium for 6 months of incubation at 25'c It is compact mass of mycelium under the microscopic observation (400x), and it is carefully considered to be the first mecelial mass to form a mature fruiting body of S. crispa.

I'm on my second attempt at cloning Sparassis crispa and Grifola frondosa from wild specimens. My first attempts just rotted on the agar. I'll let you know if I have success this time round.

Hmm..
question: why was it incubated for 6 months? also, "and it is carefully considered to be the first mecelial mass to form a mature fruiting body of S. crispa" - this suggests that it is rather hard to cultivate, does it not?

According to GGMM it takes considerably less time.

Spawn run:
Incubation temperature: 70-75f (21-25c)
relative humidity: 90-100%
duration: 20-25days
co2 : >5,000ppm
fresh air exchanges: 1 per hour
light requirements: n/a

Primordia formation:
Initiation temperature: 50-60f (10-16c)
relative humidity: 95-100%
duration: 7-14 days
co2: 500 - 1,000 ppm
fresh air exchanges: 5-7 per hour
light requirements: 1,000-1,500(2,000) lux
