revolution in Bolivia
    #2017902 - 10/17/03 12:41 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I haven't seen much about this on the mainstream media. Virtualy the entire population has risen up against government plans to sell off the country's gas to the US. They see this as the last straw in the governments continued drive of neoliberalisation, which has bought none of the promised benefits to ordinary people.

Good on the Bolivians. The fight they put up against water privatisation was heroic.

Incredible! I wish there was a decent TV news channel that would report this kind of stuff.

The BBC are reporting that the Bolivian President may have resigned.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3202216.stm

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

The only references I could find of thos on CNN.com is references to the inconvenience to tourists.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/americas/10/17/bolivia.tourism/index.html

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/americas/10/16/bolivia.travel.warning/index.html

Here's a recent article from fox news.

Nothing about tourists in this article.

Well, I don't know about "fair and balanced", but the difference in the level of detail between the CNN and FOX articles is immediately apparent. The FOX article is far superior. I rarely read either -- is this normally the case or is it just a one-off occurence?

Hmm, I wonder why I didn't find those in my searches.

The proposal tapped deep discord with Bolivia's decade-old free-market experiment, which has failed to narrow the enormous gap between rich and poor in this impoverished country.

The proposal also underscored spreading popular distrust with his administration's U.S.-backed anti-coca growing policies, which have deprived thousands of poor Indian farmers of their livelihood and plunged the president's popularity ratings into the single-digits.

I don't read either either. I just wanted to compare indymedia with Fox & CNN to see how they contrasted.

It is normally the case.

Many just don't like the fact that the Fox people don't find America to always be at fault.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers
