first grow, birthed my first batch and impatiently waiting on consolidation

I think they are turning out OK. I was worried because I didn't use wide mouths so I had trouble getting em out. Didn't bruise them too badly though apparently. Welcoming any comments. I realize my humidity gauge reads 70% in there too. Don't worry its about 80-90 by the cakes themselves

How do you know it's 80-90 rh by the cakes?
what are to cut off bottle bottoms for in the first pic?

Nice pics man. Dont worry too much about RH. The surface of the cake will have a different RH then the rest of the FC anyway, so you can put your hygrometer away. If you have any verm left try and put a finer layer on the cakes so that more of it will stick and create a microclimate. I find the verm sticks more effectively if you put some verm in a bag with your cakes and shake them up and it hardly bruises them at all.  Actually rolling them didnt do much for me. great job bro and welcome to the shroomery.

Because my perlite is dripping wet and soaking my carpet below. I guess I don't know for a fact but unfortunately I do not have access to the funds needed to have technically savvy research equipment. Its a shity humidity gauge from one of my reptile terrariums but it helped me know ballpark stuff. Regardless I'm quite comfortable with my humidity levels. I might add a fogger and greenhouse plastic liner/shelf when I can but until then I'm thinking its OK with moisture content.

The plastic cups are from broken cake bits that I tried to rescue. Cut the bottom of a bottle poked holes tiny and many on the bottom few and larger on the top and filled with perlite and a piece of alum to hold em like a cake. There is even fruit on it so I felt it was too cute to throw away.

Thanks guys! Feels good to be outta the jar!

Id like to try that in the future too. Some people on here have done some nice greenhouse grows....SwampEyes is one....but the setup seems a little elaborate. You may decide greenhouse grows aren't necessary once you get a monotub fired up.

Suspend your sgfc on jars and put a tub or tub lid underneath that to be catching run off, you shouldn't really be having run off.

as for your hygrometer, wrap it in a wet towel for an hour, then tighten the coil in the back until the gauge reads 100% rh .  you have now calibrated your cheap pet store hygrometer. the 1hr wet towel brings things to 100%

Or you can put a bottle cap full of wet salt in a jar w your hygrometer and close the lid for 24 hrs.  then adjust the coil until gauge reads 75%.

both methods work, towel method is easier/ faster

It's the humidity at the pinning surface that matters, not the humidity in the terrarium or greenhouse, etc., so you can put your hygrometer away for another hobby.

You're supposed to mist, and then let it evaporate.  This results in a constantly changing humidity and substrate moisture content, both of which are major pinning triggers.

So it isn't worth looking into, and its not a hygrometer.

I am very excited to try some tubs but wasn't sure where to start. I need to get some good prints from these guys and then I'll be fired up for whatever else. I still have some azurescens I plan on working with for next year and in the mean time testing my luck at cubes with different teks. Next up is some monotubs. I'll have a few projects going hopefully after a while and thanks for the info on letting it actually dry out. I'll work on some good FAE and raise my humidity at night while letting it dry and oxidate during the day.

If it measures humidity, it is a hygrometer.

Well, like I said, this one is meant to just be a ballpark reference.

Pussyfart beat me to it.
And that rr quote is nice and all, but I still think noobs need them
Why not calibrate it? It takes an hour of waiting and 30 seconds of work

Why?  Why does a noob NEED to stress over exact figures when neither a SGFC nor a monotub needs that much attention?

If the noob follows directions and builds the chamber right, there will be no need for a hygrometer.

They don't need to stress over exact figures, but knowing accurate ballpark helps to reassure that isn't the problem when things don't go as they are supposed to.

Plus he already has the thing lol.    I'll admit I don't use one now because there is no point, but when I first did pf tek  it was nice to know I had that part in check.
plus noobs aren't always the best at following direction

That's def right indocult, noons don't always follow directions and that is a big cause of failed first teks. No worries, it it helping me know when I'm drying up in there which is a plus. It was mostly just like you thought, as reassurance.

Update, looking good, would like to know what happened with signs of this cake, kinda mutated... Maybe not enough space or FAE? And the veil is literally breaking now. Can I harvest it? I wanna make some prints for sure!

So the veil tearing on the big one made me think "keep the spores" so I plucked em and made a few prints, well attempted at least.

Made some prints, felt like they were ready. Had no idea it'd go this quickly either.
