    #1971829 - 10/02/03 02:45 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

hi there,

these are the peyotes i bought from the weekend flower market in taiwan. i didn't have much time to take care of them cuz i've been traveling a lot lately. so i just came back from another country and this is what they turned to... pretty messed up i guess. i really want to save them... but i don't know how. i couldn't find any books related to peyote cultivation or faq in taiwan. so here's my last hope. please help me out what should i do?

regards

Is the part at the bottom soft?

looks like they had a little over-watering. Put some extra soil or little stones in the pots so that only the plant itself remains sisible and not the root. don't water for a while and good luck!

  • If those bottom parts arent soft:
Transplant to a pot double the size they're in now. Fill cactus-soil up to the root junction and put some stones to cover the top of the soil.

  • If bottom is soft

Pull it out, see if there are signs of recovery or spreading
  • Spreading: cut off the button from the affected area and cut about 1 cm into healthy non necrotic/rotting tissue. Calluos over and reroot or graft. Also more or less in the same fashion with the root, you can graft that onto another cactus, or if there's some green tissue left callous it and see if it'll force pups.

  • Recovering: Hold off on the water and the repotting, until you see signs of the mushy-ness abating, then repot as noted above.

thanks a lot for all the replies.

the bottom part : is it the root or the bottom of the body?
the root, is solid hard. the bottom of the body is soft and yellowish.
i don't think i over watering them cuz i haven't watered them for
like over a month. plus the temperature in taiwan was hot like hell
this summer. it looks like the soil went dry and the cacti poped-up.

can i use perlite on top of soil?

Is it like so soft and squishy that you can push on it and it pushes in good and feels all squishy? If so that's not good.

First thing I would do would be to repot them into a much larger pot (preferably unglazed terra cotta) with a gritty, high lime mix. IMHO most proprietary ´cactus mix´ soils contain high levels of acid peat and are totally unsuitable for cacti that originate from limestone areas (like L. williamsii).

And give them a top dressing to make them look nice.

Maybe some mod or whatever might think this has now been long enough.

Spanishfly, this is the second thread that you've bumped up from several years ago. OP hasn't even been on this forum in over 7 years
