young plum tree
    #19498439 - 01/30/14 08:18 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I have a young plum tree, maybe 6 feet tall. When transporting I had to hang about a foot of the top of the tree out the window. Doing so snapped a few of the smaller branches.

Should I break off the broken pieces?

Your call really, i've had snapped branches still produce leaves and such

Depending on the current state of the tree, if it is relatively healthy...snipping the broken pieces could be beneficial.

Cut them with a saw or secateurs back to a node or branch, this helps the tree to heal quicker and doesn't leave wood there to decay, which attracts pathogens.

No saw needed. They are tiny stick sized.

IIRC fruit trees are often prone to some pathogen that makes the bark go all weird. Not sure of what it is or how to prevent it when there's a wound. Fungicide maybe?

Mostly prevent problems like that by pruning in the correct season, some pathogens are only active at certains times of year. Other than that you can apply pruning glues/pastes etc to cauterize the wound and prevent infection. Making clean cuts and proper pruning techniques generally do the job though.

Cool. Thanks. I also think I know why they were getting rid of them.

My tree for example has a bent stem, semi low branches, sparatic branches, and the "leader" branch was cut short, meaning its no longer the highest point.
