I live on a street. Actually, they call it a circle. Suburbia is a horrid place to be, but the grasshoppers seem to enjoy it. So, I happened to be rolling along on my self-powered, two-wheeled vehicle one day. One of these grasshoppers decided he was leaving the nest, as it were. He hopped upon my leg and rested. He was going to new worlds he could never imagine. I was quite surprised when he didnt jump off right away, and the whole concept of him (as I like to say. For two reasons: One, we are socially patriarchical at this point in history Two, I myself am male.) Travelling beyond the realms that would be impossible by his own power. We were best friends for a mile or so, then he got spooked and off he went. I tried to replay his life in my head. Him travelling to new destinations, as it were, and meeting new friends. His family was gone, but he was amongst many others of his own kind. I bet the grass looked greener and more edible, only because it was different. He and I have a lot in common. He was travelling through unimaginable distances via leg. I am travelling through unimaginable distances via hurtling rock. I think I turned into that grasshopper that day. And he into me. Sometimes, I wish i did have those black eyes that seem to glare permenantly. Anyway, that grasshopper made my day. I can only hope that he came to the same realizations that I have. And it may be.

I have witnessed a few similar occurrences.. Once upon a time a ladybug found it's way into my cousins car. We drove over to my cottage, a few hours away. It planted itself on the back windshield the whole trip. When we got there, I scooped the delicate creature up with a business card, and set it free into an entirely new environment. I too, wondered if the ladybug had a chance to realize the great distance it just traveled. I do hope it had a successful journey into it's basically forced upon change in habitat..
