The Plan where Plants save the Planet.

What  we must do:

Five inextricably linked areas must be addressed simultaneously:

1. We must bring environmentally damaging activities under control to restore and protect the integrity of the earth's systems we depend on. We must, for example, move away from fossil fuels to more benign, inexhaustible energy sources to cut greenhouse gas emissions and the pollution of our air and water. Priority must be given to the development of energy sources matched to third world needs -- small scale and relatively easy to implement. We must halt deforestation, injury to and loss of agricultural land, and the loss of terrestrial and marine plant and animal species.

2. We must manage resources crucial to human welfare more effectively. We must give high priority to efficient use of energy, water, and other materials, including expansion of conservation and recycling.

3. We must stabilize population. This will be possible only if all nations recognize that it requires improved social and economic conditions, and the adoption of effective, voluntary family planning.

4. We must reduce and eventually eliminate poverty.

5. We must ensure sexual equality, and guarantee women control over their own reproductive decisions

Think about it.  :sun:

This might sound like an asshole thing to say, but I am in fact an asshole, so it should be alright.

I couldn't care less. I'll hardly be alive when any of these matters break into action.

Well... The poverty and sexual equality issues are things I can't overlook. I full heartedly agree there... But the enviromental stuff doesn't really matter to me. Wish it did.
Hey, atleast I'm honest.

interesting. i tend to be the sort of opposite. if people can't learn to treat nature with respect, and live in harmony with it, then they don't have any business living at all. a few simple changes in lifestyle can profoundly reduce the amount of strain an individual puts on the environment. i still can't believe there's cities in the US that don't have recycling programs. two simple things- practice the three R's, and adopt a vegetarian(or at least mostly vegetarian) diet. anyone can do these these things and cut the amount of resources they use to a tiny fraction of the current norm. anyone unwilling can suffer and perish for all i care.

people are wonderful creatures, but there are far too many of us. i certainly don't want to see my friends and relatives die, but i think a major population crash is virtually inevitable at this point. either people or ignorance; something's gotta go.

I don't agree with the first point..

1. The environment is still pretty healthy. We are much cleaner now than in the previous decades. Deforestation isn't such a big issue, the figures have been warped by greenpeace etc. Since 1945 global forest cover has been pretty stable at around 30% of land area.
I think it's unethical to demand that developing countries do everything to conserve their forests. In the developed countries we cut down most of our own forests centuries ago. This is partly what helped us in becoming so rich. If developing countries can get richer and feed more of their people by cutting down parts of their forests, I think they should do so. There's still more than enough forest, and developing countries will become developed before they lose all their forests.
I think we should continue using fossil fuels until cleaner energy sources become cheaper (which won't take that long). If we cut down on our fossil fuel use now, like Kyoto wants us to do, we will be slowing down our economy and technological advancement enormously.

3. I don't feel there is an overpopulation. The world can easily support a couple of billion more people. Especially if you look at the ever increasing yields of farms, and the future of genetic engineered crops. High population growth will automatically stop when poverty decreases, which it has steadily been doing in the last decades. In some european countries there's already a natural decline in population.

just my two cents..

Let's say everyone was a vegetarian. The harvesting of crops would kill more animals than the amount that would be required to slaughter if everyone ate meat all the time.

http://maddox.xmission.com/grill.html

If we're in fact part of nature, like all other beings and so on. Should we then enforce vegetarianism upon other carnivore creatures, or? - No.
So then your point of view must be that we're above nature... And in that case, shouldn't we do as we please?

That can't be true. In biomass terms a cow needs to eat 10kg (or some higher factor) to increase it's own weight by 1kg. These 10kg's have to be farmed somewhere. So in those terms it's ineffecient.
I totally agree with your second point though. Carnivorous animals eat meat, we are omnivorous, so why shouldn't we eat meat.
We are above nature and we can do as we please. That also means we can ethically decide not to eat meat.
The best would be if we could grow our meat in a factory or something. Which we might be able to do efficiently someday. Scientist have already succeeded in growing certain organs without creating life.

Yes, that'd be the goal. Or cloning, but that would be a matter of ethics.
I actually read an article about some weird hybrid plant with flesh tissue that bore fruit.
Can't remember what the source was, nor if it was a reliable one or not. But it sounds like a load of crap to me... But who knows huh?

Yeah, could be true. It's amazing what some plants can do. They've also bioengineered a plant that makes biodegradable plastics.
