Shroomery Elections
    #1938142 - 09/21/03 02:53 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

I think this is a good idea.

Shroomery Elections

1.Mods and Admins must be elected to power by members.

2.6 month term lengths for Moderators and 1 Year term lengths for Adminstrators.

3.Election's Forum created to discuss Shroomery 'politics' and hold elections when terms end.

4.New nominees suggested by members, as to prevent current administration nominating only friends.

I dont know, I think that would be fun to do. The only problem I can think of would be if polls were used for elections, could easily be overrun by puppets. There would have to be a different system or a post count limit or something. I'll write out a longer thing if you guys like the idea..lol like a Shroomery constitution.

Here's a novel idea. Let's let those in charge of the site make the picks.

--------------------
You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

that would be fun, but those who own the site will always decide what goes and what doesn't here. i wouldn't turn the site over to others if i owned it; why should they?

admins to the shroomery are as bush to the u.s.

hold elections if you want. the outcome will not matter. those who have the power will put who they want in positions of power. it would be fun to hold mock elections though, just to see who would win if there was a real election.

wouldn't mod for a day elections be fun? every third tuesday, some insane bastard could be elected to a position that would give him/her potential to wreak a little havoc for the day. hmm...bad idea.

i totally agree with you. it would be fun.
i wasn't saying the admins own the site. i'm not sure who does. (3d, you have at least part ownership of this site don't you?) i was saying that whoever does own it (the dea  :smirk:), decides who rules here.

I think it would be fun to put on a show in the old barn. Darla's mom could sew the costumes, and all of the little rascals could play parts...

I'm not a big fan of the democracy. Too many nuts out ther especiially at a fairly anonymous website where cheating is not only possible, but likely.

--------------------
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniencies attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson

I could see the novelty in the idea, but I also see the flame wars off in the distance as well.

There would probably be some recalls...

I think it's a bad idea. This isn't a democracy.

It already kind of works like that to an extent. If a lot of members want someone to be a mod, the admins will take notice and decide if they would make a good moderator or not. But the major flaw with this idea is that it comes down to a popularity contest, and popularity is not always a good judge of character and balanced decision making. I could give you about thirty examples off the top of my head.

The members don't run the site or maintain it, the admins do.
A member can always nominate someone to be a moderator. But I don't think they should be the deciding factor, they don't always know what it takes to be a good moderator. And then it would come down to the members just nominating their friends.

Admins are the decision makers, because they pay for the site (or used to before the ads), they keep public relations in good order, they maintain the site, make sure it's always running smoothly, they know all the qualities of a good moderator and what to look for and so much more. I can tell you that admins do not choose moderators that are just their friends. When someone is nominated, they look at that persons past post history.. how they act.. how they handle a tight situation.. if they have any hidden agendas.. and basically overall how good their intentions are. No one wants a moderator because he wants to have power. A good moderator should be in a position to serve the community.

So yeah.. you can vote. But I don't think that the members will ever be the deciding factor in who is and isn't a moderator. *Most* members have little knowledge of what it takes overall. It would turn into a big mess. You think some mods are on a power trip now? Feh.. wait until the members start deciding who is mod and admin. Chaos. Yeah, sure, it might be "fun"... but tell me what good it would do for the community as a whole?

And admin is another thing altogether.. they have 20 times the responsibility of moderators. No way in hell should a member ever decide who the admins should be. Sorry.

And just fyi.. the admins do own the site. It's a private server.

Mods and Admins must be elected to power by members.

No.

6 month term lengths for Moderators and 1 Year term lengths for Adminstrators.

Why exactly? Shouldn't someone's length of service be determined by their quality of service or lack thereof? That's the way it is now and it works just fine. What happens if you get a shitty mod.. 6 months? Admins..1 year.. no way.

New nominees suggested by members, as to prevent current administration nominating only friends

And what exactly will prevent members from nominating only friends?

There used to be elections for Moderators. Anyone remember that?

Yes. The flaw with elections is its purely a popularity contest. We had mods win who had no interest in the job or didnt have time for it.

The way it currently works is that we have users nominate or other mods nominate users. From that we pick mods, but its always by many others recomendations.

Now the way I would like it done is that we post in the forum that needs a mod, leave that thread open for 1 week so that people who are interested can voice their thoughts and also others can support anyone who wants to become a mod. Then we select from those people.

We've done this with great success and I'd like to see it implemented for all new mod openings.

I also agree with Shroomism

Yes... I think that is a good way to do things. Make a sticky in the forum needing a mod, and let the regulars of the forum nominate people, and the nominees can present their side of how they would make a good mod, and let the admins decide from there. Of course, the nominees would have to actually want the job in the first place. I too remember when people won elections and had no interest in it at all.

I think that's a good way of doing things and it makes everone happy in the long run.
