Trading books...
    #1919393 - 09/15/03 07:23 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I made a post in the marketplace looking to trade philosophy books, but no one has responded. Are there many philosophically minded people on the shroomery? I assumed there would be.
If anyone is interested, my post is here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post1918406

Also, please PM me if you'd just like to chat about philosophy.

The only books I have now are the Teach Yourself Norwegian book that I don't use and a Bass Guitar magazine.. oh yeah, the transcriptions for METALLICA's Ride the Lightning and ...And Justice For All.

All my books are in Wisconsin, and there isn't a lot. I don't even want to start to think about international shipping costs, either..
Peace.

I have a some spiritual books, mostly about Zen Buddhism. Also a couple of Bibles and a Koran. If any of those are the type of thing you're looking for let me know.

I don't know about trading, but I did take a B.A. in philosophy before the other degrees (one of my prof's was Bob Brier, who co-authored with J.B. Rhine at Duke - Father of Parapsychology; and who makes mummies on TLC since he is also a world-class Egyptologist). Bob influenced me quite a bit.

I mean, I don't  often pull Hegel's 'Phenomenology of Mind' off the shelf for the heck of it, and most of my philosophical interest has been in philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, Greek and Indian thought for the most part...but I  do love Wisdom - Sophia or Prajna or whatever you want to name Her. Yes, I always carry 1 or 2 books in my backpack. Our library has wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves on two walls (mostly filled), and another 7'x8' bookshelf in our hallway. But then, my Lady and I are  old, so we've had lots of time to buy, read, and display them (and NO, we are not bookworm types AT ALL!)

A few people have asked me what books I'm looking for, they're listed in the link but I'll copy the message for the sake of simplicity.

I'm looking to buy or trade philosophy books. At the moment I'm looking for books by Leibniz, Pope, Hume, Johnson, Smith, Voltaire, Jefferson, Rousseau, Shakespeare, Pascal, Racine, Diderot, Novalis, Goethe, Locke, Montesquieu and others.
Also, Catherine Bush's "The Rules of Engagement", George Elliot Clarke's "Whylah Falls", and Joy Kogawa's "Obasan".
I have plenty of classical texts to trade, please list what you have here.

I read some of the people you name (Liebniz, Voltaire, Locke, Hume, Montesquieu) - the Enlightenment period - when reason was the ascendant (over faith) faculty of the day. It was refreshing in that it heralded science and tolerance to a certain extent, but the era also reduced religious experience to rational mysticism, social gospel, and moral relativism (don't forget DeSade wrote in this period).

When I became a philosophy major, I was taking lots of high dose LSD trips and reading Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga, Pseudo-Dionysus's 'The Mystical Theology and the Divine Names,' Plotinus's 'The Enneads,' the works of Plato and 'The Foundations of Tibetan Buddhism' by Lama Govinda. After I left college, and had no education that was marketable, I drove a truck for half a year before entering a Christian seminary and turning to theology, comparative religion, psychology and religion. All of these things eventually went into my Doctoral training and dissertation, but the 'worldly philosophers' that you name, while part of my education, do not belong to my passion for the Infinite and Eternal. Their writings are incommensurate with the psychedelicized soul of this old acid head. Peace & Love.

are you saying that dude who had the TV special where he made the mummy was also the Father of Parapsychology? Cool! I saw that special and had no idea! I guess it makes sense. Studying the ancient egyptians tends to push one in that direction.

MYOCMICHELLE:

Damn, I could have filled half that list if some asshole hadnt stolen a bunch of books out of my car. Fucker took my priceless yet monetarily worthless books and just left my $1000 stereo...

oh yeah and I aint givin up my jefferson
