HELP ID Copelandia cyanescens
    #1916033 - 09/14/03 04:54 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Hello Hunters! I found these babies this afternoon, growing with about 10 others in a dung pile. I am hoping they are Copelandia cyanescens. Sorry these pictures suck. Some were over exposed, and the spore print, believe it or not was on a white sheet of paper. Anyways here's the info. When picked: Caps were about 1.5cm, white color with brownish/orangish spot on top. After picked, the caps turned a grayish/gray blue within 15-30 minutes. I can't say that I ever saw a really distinctive blue, just more of a grayish blue. The pictures you see are about 3 - 4 hours old. The caps are now more brownish and darker gray. Gills were gray to dark gray when picked. They are now pretty much black. The stems are thin, 3-3.5 cm, and have turned dark brown and black. I never really saw any bluing on the stems, but they are only a few millimeters wide. The spore print on the white paper is definitely black. I know it's hard to tell from the picture. So, what do you think? I only picked these to for id purposes. There are still at least 10 others in the cow pie. I wanted to let them grow more because they seem so small. Should I wait 8-10 hours, or go get them. Thanks for your help. This forum rocks.

That is a ID post done right man. I hate to have to tell you that it's not a copelianda cyanescens. Its a panaeolus of some sort. Not sure what. Didn't see a loc. for you- are you in the gulf coast region?

i don't think those are Pan. cyanescens. here's a tip: when you post an id request don't even suggest bluing you don't think you saw, it dosen't do anything but thrw people off.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll keep on hunting. Also, I'll be sure to make sure I see blue before I add it to my id request. Thanks buddha and concrete!

I just picked some of those today. They are a Panaeolus. I find them all them time in all kinds of manure. Cow,horse, moose caribou, bear. Any type of grazing animal seems to work for these guys. As far as what type of Pan they are, sphinctrinus has a white color to them and the semiovatus is a lighter color too. For good pics of all Pans do a Google.com image search on Panaeolus. I have yet to find any actives with this group though. Good luck!

HEre are some copelandia cyanescens which could resemble your images of what you thought were copelandia cyanescens sinc ethe colr varies from cap to cap and from weather confitions to weather conditions with manty color changes in them.

From Cambodia

From hawaii

Large Hawaiian Copelandias with a lighter to show size.

From Malaysia two different Copelandia shrooms in the smae habitat and manure.

From Suphanburi

Co-pe at ban Thuirian Koh Samui:

From Near Hanoi, North Viet-Nam

Your shroom could be a cope but it might also be Panaeolus campanulatus.

[edit: i fixed one of your image tags MJ. nice mycoporn by the way ]

txs3arch3r,

I think the ones that you found are Panaeolus campanulatus. Not active.

Look at mushroom John's photos, and see the blue staining on the Copelandia shrooms.

Well New AK, Panaeolus subbalteatus has been reported from Alaska by several mycologists and published in journals and in m ushroom field guides.

Maybe even have Psilocyben cyanescens there. It is possible. They are in Russia int he north.

Of course you pronbably have Amanita muscaria. Im sure of that.
