flies/ knats in my grow
    #19019995 - 10/23/13 03:35 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

im trying to figure out why there would be flies/knats in one of my grows. its unusual.  i normally dont have this problem.  Its odd case i made two casing at the same time; a cube and a panaelos, both using 100% horse poo from the same pasturalized pillow case, yet only flies on the panaelous.  Leads me to suspect that something about the panaelous is whats causing the flies.  IDK if somehow eggs got into the PF jars threw bad spores or what. The poo was properly pasturalized, im sure of that.  Anyways,  what can i do to detour these flies.  I want them out of my grow.

Suck them out with the vacuum
And or fill a shot glass of coke and theyll drown in it.

RR has suggested before to place a glass of Red Wine near it and the bugs will drown in there.

yeah,  i used to use beer bottles with a little left at the bottom as fly traps before.  They are really quiet effective

Funny I come across this. Just started getting some flies (from my aloe plants) starting to buzz around my terrarium. Time to set up a beer trap

A mild dilution of dawn dish detergent and water sprayed onto the house plant dirt at least once a day will chase them out.  They are very common in house plants at times, and certain types of "gnats" will love both a plant and your mushrooms.

Bottles with beer at the bottom work great.  I've used small soda bottles that were modified into a trap:

Works great for everything from slugs to gnats.  they go in and cant get out.  It stunk badly after a few slugs died in it, but they kept coming.

On the subject of slugs, copper wiring keeps them out well I've heard.

But why are they only in my panaelous tub?

Not sure why they're only in the one tub, but my solution to gnats and fruit flies which like the three-tiered fruit basket on my kitchen counter is a couple drops of dish soap in a 50/50 mix of cider vinegar and water.  Draws them in like, well, flies.
