Grain ProbleM. Someone help
    #1898534 - 09/09/03 02:31 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Afoaf tried growing w grains in past. However, the myc used to inject were dead, and the grain seemed to get very warm and dusty after about 5 or 6 days. Is that FERMENTING?
the friend just innoc some wbs... it's going very well, however, he just noticed a small amount of this fermenting happening where the myc hasn't reached quite yet. Will the Myc. network overcome this crap in it's way or will the fermenting take over?
anyone w past exp w this or anyone w an opinion, that'd b great.

If your wbs is fermenting, the jar will have a funky smell to it. If so, the fermented areas usually will not support myc growth, and invariably are considered contaminated.

I agree.... But have another question;

warm and dusty?... Where do you keep them?... Some grain jar feeling warm when you handle it sounds ok but the dust stuff.... Sounds a little strange to me...

Sounds like sterilization problems. You use a filter for the jar? you PC it at 15 PSI for an hour?

The WBS could be drying out or it could be contams.

Try and get a picture.

It seems that there are NO problems coming from innoculation. Some WBS appears to have worked out, whereas a majority of them have been overcome by this fermenting process. Yes, the WBS was pc'd for 60mins at 15psi. It has been suggested to pc it for 90 - 120mins, as it appears that it is the sterilization where the problem exists.
anymore opinions would be great.

If the grain is sterilized properly their should be no fermenting. I let grain soak for 24 hrs. so grain can fully fill with water, then boil for 15 min. I pc for 45 min. That seems to do the trick for me.
I innoculated 2 jars over 3 months ago and put them in a box under my bed. I forgot about them. Then I checked a few days ago they had both fully colonized and there was no sign of infection. So I cased them and put them out, now I am waiting.

Oh yea, these are not illegal mushrooms.
