water heater is not heating water!

Alright, so for those who frequent this forum, you may have noticed that i recently built a TiT incubator. But, as per usual, ive got some problems..
The water heater i bought is a Whisper Water Heater from walliefart. its 120v 60hz 200w, so plenty strong enough to heat a 35gal tub. Or so i imagine anyway.
Now.. ive had it running all day, and when i stick my hand in the water, it still feels cool. the area directly surrounding the water heater is very slightly warm, but not warm enough by any means.
Any tips? i dont think im doing anything wrong, and it seems like the heater is working, aside from the part where its not actually heating the water.. but it lights up to indicate that its running, and as far as i can tell, its giving off heat, just not nearly enough!
also, it has a heat setting to regulate how warm you want the water. i currently have it set to the max setting.
any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Why are you incubating to begin with?
Mycelium will grow fine at room temperature with ambient light.

Hah, as long as it is between like 70-90 degrees fahrenheit you should be fine nonetheless. Warmer temperatures open up passageways for contams to enter. Anyways, it sounds like your heater is not powerful enough to heat the entire tub of water. I'm no expert on water heaters though! Best of luck!

well ive heard that anything over 80 degrees is just asking for contams, so my goal is essentially to keep my incubator at a steady 78 degrees.
and you may be right about it not being powerful enough.. but i think it might be that the heater is a bust. 200 watts for a 35 gallon tub only half full should be more than sufficient.. but i could be wrong, who knows(hopefully someone here!).
i guess i mainly want to see if anyone else has experience using the 'Whisper' brand water heaters. i know ive read multiple different times that i should shy away from walliefart water heaters, and get a nice one from a pet shop, but for convenience sake, i went ahead and grabbed one from wallieworld while i was there.
If the problem is in fact the quality of my heater, than i will most likely go to petsmart or somewhere similar, to grab a nice heater.

Mycelium usually won't have a problem at room temperatures, but having consistent temperatures provides a good enough benefit that it may be worth it to people with lots of fluctuation at room temperature.
OP, is your heater plugged in? Are you sure it is a submersible heater? Does your heater say it can be used horizontally?
I know these sound like stupid questions, but, you would be surprised
It seems like somebody else is having a problem with a similar heater http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080318012524AAQ5qYR

80F degree water feels slightly cool to the touch... Remember, your body is 98.6F - If the water feels warm, it's way too hot!!!
Plus, if you intend on using a submersible heater like this, water movement is necessary. Without water movement, the heater will not be able to keep the water at a constant temperature. Maybe a small submersible pump could help.
I would set the heater to 80F at most and find a way to circulate the water if you intend on using an incubator.

You should throw a thermometer in there and get a proper temp reading.
200w is way overkill for a 35 gallon TiT. A 50w does fine.
If it is really not heating the water, perhaps the unit is defective.

aye might be defective, when i used a TIT i hooked a seperate reptile thermostat into the aquarium heater itself

ooooh, thanks guys!
mush - yes, i am using my unit correctly and it is okay to be placed horizontally lol
wolfie - i feel stupid now that you mention that. i didnt think about the fact that it would still feel cool to the touch! and i have two seperate bubble stones running off a nice air pump for circulation.
frank/twist - i think i will do just that and get a thermometer for the water. i figured if i could read the temp in the top tub, that would be sufficient, but i wouldnt mind making sure the water is heating correctly as well
again, thanks for the help! DD

aye that way you can adujust your temp from outside the tub with the reptile thermostat.

yeah so i guess i totally just didnt wait long enough for it to heat up properly, but its working flawlessly now!
now as for a reptile thermometer.. is this a common thing? or is it going to take some searching to find a nice one?
im about to make a run to petco/petsmart so im hoping they will have it! i also think im going to buy up some supplies to build a glove box for G2G transfers, and i have a quick question concerning that as well.
For the room i plan to do all my sterilized work, would it be very beneficial to buy a true HEPA air filter system thing? Ive thought about it before just to be on the safe side, but considering its a bit expensive, i didnt want to make the investment unless it actually makes a difference!
again, thanks for all the help guys, couldnt do it without you!!!!

no need for hepa filter with SAB, just shut off fans, close windows, ac units etc if you like, i also spray my sab with water helps keep any nasties stuck to the walls of the SAB.
petco etc should have decent thermostats for bout 20 bux
