Contam question

There is a smell to my jars but I'm not sure if they are contaminated or not. Now that they've been incubating for 5 days they don't smell the way they did when the substrate was first prepared. It's a stronger vermiculite smell that fills the rubbermaid incubator and hits you in the face when you open the lid. So what does contamination smell/look like in an uncolonized jar? I know in a colonized jar it's easy to see the colors of contamination on the white cake but in an uncolonized jar how do you tell? Thanks.

Do you use a heater ?
It could be stalled air inside the incubator. 5 days is too short for any contamination to develop a noticeable odor inside the jars.
Keep an eye on them though.

Yeah, I use a heating pad and I vent the incubator 2-3 times a day. The smell that comes out is pretty strong but I'm not sure if it's just the smell of heated substrate or a bacteria of some sort

If the smell is getting stronger, then possibly you've got some bacterial or yeast contamination.
Btw, watch out how you put the jars inside the incubator. You should have a gap between the jars and the bottom of the incubator, if you don't have one, your jars will heat up to much because they are too close to the heating pad.
