Being double jointed is just a genetic anomaly. If that trait is passed on to successive generations and becomes the norm for the species then it becomes evolution.

Well, double jointed doesn't mean you have a joint that goes both ways, but it's real. My thumbs are double jointed.

My thumbs are double jointed too, I can bend my thumb *backwards* so it forms a 90 degree angle with itself.

Edit: Just needed to make that clear since anyone can bend it forwards!

Well, as it was said before, there is no such thing as being double-jointed.

The correct term is hypermobility, and it simply means that the connective tissue around the joints is softer and the ligaments are more flexible.

To some degree, stretching can allow for a person of seemingly normal flexibility to display this.  Though some people do display an abnormal ability to contort their appendages.

I once knew a girl who could bend her hand back so that the fingers pointed toward the elbow, and there was no space between the forearm and the back of the hand.
