G'day! just wondering about the properties of ascorbic acid in lemons as a natural preservative, aiding the growth of mycelium without bacteria. Any knowledge or comments welcome please.

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.
Reason: Moved to mushroom cultivation.
Citric acid can be used as a pH buffer, but it's not going to prevent contamination. RR

Just forget about LC dude. It is too sketchy and there are much better ways to go about it imo. Like agar and using g2g to increase stock cultures

It's not going to prevent contaminants for sure, but would it not help prevent them as well as providing extra nutrients? You still need to practice sterility, but a lot of competing contams prefer a more alkaline environment so I'd think it would give you a bit of an edge.
edit: As far as LC goes I've always liked RR's suggested method, take a jar of grain and a sterile H2O syringe and just suck up some mycilia from that. I take it a step farther and make a sterile jar of water and then inject it into that to let it expand, then you essentially have a LC with very little nutrients in it and you only have to wait 2 or 3 days before it's 'done'. Of course you can also simply use it right then without waiting as you already should have plenty of mycilia floating around in it.

The best way to prevent contamination in an lc is to use a clean culture and not expose the lc contamination
