Could I use a towel?

Could I keep a damp towel in the terrarium, that isn't touching the substrate to help keep the air moist?

I don't know how effective it would be. If you got far enough in the process to need a terrarium, why fuck it up now? Go get some perlite, it's not that expensive.

Evaporation from a towel in a closed environment is asymptotic. That means that the rate at which the humidity increases toward 100% would slow down more and more as it approached 100%. A fan blowing over the wet towel will help, but perlite would be a much better choice. An active humidifier also works well and some can provide gas exchange.
