Recent increase in connection attempts?!
    #1852996 - 08/26/03 09:24 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Hey,

I'm running Zone Alarm firewall since a couple of months and as an average, the firewall blocks something like 100 connection attempts a day (Pings, Echo, Direct connect, etc...)

But since a couple of days, I get so many blocked connections, something like 1000 a day!!

Someone noticed the same thing recently? Is that related to the recent SoBig virus alert?

It could very easily be. But I wouldn't worry too terribly much though, as your firewall seems to be working well. Just don't forget to keep your AV and system updated!
(I use ZoneAlarm too...it's a very good firewall!)

100 to 1000 a day? Wow, that seems unusual.

My firewall records maybe three or four attempts per month.

did you record the packets? What OS are you on?

If its windows, try capturing the data with http://analyzer.polito.it/docs/default.htm. http://windump.mirror.ethereal.com/ is a console tool to do the same thing.

I wonder if it could be one of the MSBlaster variants.

Could be an infected neighbor, or could be your ISP looking for illegal servers on their net.

Is the increase after you close down a P2P file sharing program? I know if I close down a P2P program on my computer, I'll get bombarded with like 200 in the next following minutes. I use zone alarm on my DMZ computer on my router.

The recent increase in connection attempts are likely other computers on the subnet that are infected with the Nachi virus.

what could one do to someone who attempts to get into your computer? Can you send them a message to fuck off?

"If only i could trace there ip location."

Look for a program called Visual Route. I think their web site has an eval download available that you can fool around with.
