Question:
First off I'm having trouble acquiring verm. Do you think they might have it at Home Depot? How much would I need? I will be working with it in casings and on my cakes frequently. I want to have enough. They say it contains asbestos??? Is that true?

I have been to walmart, home depot(had it but was out) and lowes. All didnt have it except home depot so try the one by you, As for the other questions good luck, hope ya have better luck then me im on a easter egg hunt! A couple of years ago, there's been a batch of verm from an American company that indeed contained asbestos. This was an error, I believe something went wrong in some packaging plant or so. However, this was a one-time occurence, and hasn't happened since. It's also not very logical, asbestos being present in vermiculite. It's just because the company mentioned above also produced asbestos this was possible. Of course, quality procedures have been adjusted after the incident, so there's not much to be afraid of at the moment.

Hey EnCHaNTeDPiXiE i was all over my area and i couldn't find the right kind of vermiculite one store (agway) had a 4cubic foot bag and that was way to much and the other bag was to fine. I went to my local lowes and they didn't have it. Then i went to another lowes a couple towns away and they had the right kind i wanted its called
Sta-Green Horticultural Vermiculite. I probably looked at over a dozen places and only Lowes carried it. I hope U have luck finding it.

I could not find verm in my area, So I sat down and went through the yellow pages calling every place that had to do with hardware, greenhouse, animal feed, farm equipment and I called all the farmers markets... Finaly after 3 hours of asking "You wouldent be able to sell me some vermiculite would you" I hit pay dirt at a feed store, that also sold vermiculite... though they only had 3 10qt bags and would not have more till the spring I still found it, I got all three :laugh: So I suggest thats what you do, I had to drive 45 miles to get it but it was still cheaper then paying shipping.

Thanks I'm still looking, the feed store sounds good, I'll try around. I've checked all nearby Lowes and Home depots with no luck. Maybe some local garden supplies will carry it.

I had a little trouble as well, one home depot carrried but was out. Looked a little more and found that gardening stores is probably your best bet. Some place dedicated to gardening.
