Georgia. Amanita jacksonii/ ceasarea ??
    #18437371 - 06/18/13 02:40 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat: Found quite close to loblolly pines (Pinus taeda), water oaks (Quercus nigra),and  white oaks (Quercus alba). Found on the ground in clusters of 3-4, 2-3 feet apart. There is an abundance of tiny, ruby red pins.

Gills: Pale yellow to white. Not attached to stipe. Crowded, thin gills.

Stem: Yellow to whitish. Smooth. No visible veil. Small evidence of ridges at the base. No really visible volva.

Cap: Bright red to orangish yellow at the  margins. Clearly lined margins. There were small warts that were easily brushed off.

Spore print color: Pale yellow. Similar to pollen.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Southeast U.S.

The identification is confusing because there where no egg-like sacs left at the base of the mushroom, nor were any veils present.

I will take habitat pictures soon. They're very pretty, distinct mushrooms. And if they happen to be A. caesarea/jacksonii, they're supposed to be quite delicious if cooked thoroughly.

Oh shit, I messed up! These actually look more like Amanita parcivolvata. I can't find any reliable information on whether or not they are edible. Being that they are in the same section of the genus as Amanita muscaria et al, it would probably be best not to experiment.

I think Alan once told me that they are edible. But don't eat them based
on that.

He mentioned something about hippies confusing them for A. muscaria and that that probably happens a lot
and there are no reports of anyone dying from eating them...

I could be remembering that all wrong.
