I *hate* it when they tell me vermiculite is banned!!!
    #1836380 - 08/21/03 06:54 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

This is more of a rant then anything, but I went into Walmart today to purchase some verm. The lady at the counter goes on a tangent, saying how the government has banned vermiculite and how it is so bad for you, etc. etc. I stand there and smile indulgently, thinking, 'you dumb bitch..I bought some at Lowes last week!!' I should have just gone there to begin with.

Has anyone else had problems buying verm at Walmart?

*grrrr*

The best place to go period is southern states. If you dont have any of those in your area any farm like store you can buy a huge ass bag of fine grade vermiculite for 10 dollars a bag and the bags about 5 foot tall by 3 foot wide about 25 pounds or 30 pounds of the stuff its a heavy bag

Lowes is the only place I've seen it.  Home-Depot, Walmart, and some of the local nursuries don't carry it for whatever reason.  If I ever come across some it gets snatched up immediately, even if no projects are in mind

*growls* lol!  I hate that too!!!  It totally defeats the purpose of asking someone to 'direct you' to the vermiculite!  Crazy bastards....

Vermiculite is NOT banned.

Years ago some asbestos got into some vermiculite (a one time incident) and everyone got in a tissy about it.

The big names usually don't carry it because they're afraid of law suits...

Maybe if they were better informed/educated they'd make a few extra bucks

Yeah I think Lana is probably right. I called up a home depot a while back and they told me "Under _._. laws and regulations we aren't allowed to carry it" or what not. idk.

Home Depot has it, and most local nurseries have it.

I've never had trouble locating vermiculite, hardware stores and nurseries around here all seem to carry it. I've heard (unconfirmed) that it actually is banned in Illinois because of that asbestos nonsense though.

Sources may and will vary. Home Depot does not carry it in my section of the country. Wal-Mart does not have it here either (especially since these are much smaller Wal-Mart?s compared to the ones found in southern states). Lowe?s does carry it here during the spring and summer months (and is usually out of stock every time I visit). Although ironically the one thing I don?t use - Perlite, can be found everywhere.  :mad2:

Anybody that cannot find it should be able to locate a nursery in your area that can order you some if they do not stock it. This is your best bet, especially if you are looking for a certain grade. Many landscaping and greenhouse/nursery type places can do this for you, at a reasonable price. Much bigger bags can be had this way, and bulk is cheaper than the little "enough for a flower pot" bags... This is the way to go

And a final reminder to everybody who uses vermiculite:
Stock up now before the season ends!!! Especially if your source is one of the big named ?Everything-Marts?, who routinely change stock to suit the winter months. Plus, if you are worried about security, then buying vermiculite in the dead of winter may not be the best idea.
