Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Mycena is an interesting guess.

I was going to start with Coprinus.

I guess we really need a spore print on this one. It would help to see the underside of the cap, too.

Happy mushrooming!

I would say Coprinus. I have found mushrooms similar to the one pictured above in my lawn quite a few times.

They might be related to Coprinus plicatilis or the "Pleated Inky Cap".

No, I think Parasola (Coprinus) plicatilis fits the bill more. The fragility of the cap and frequency of the plicate folding of the cap margin is closer to P. plicatilis than P. auricoma.

To really know which it is would require a microscope. Check through the key that leads to those links.

Unfortunately, matching specimens to photographs doesn't actually do a very accurate job of identification. You end up matching things that aren't really that important and ignoring things that can't really be ignored.

Without doing the micro work, the best we can say is that it's close to whatever species.

Happy mushrooming!

I wasn't making a definitive ID, just saying that this shroom is much more likely to belong to the plicatilis than the auricomus group.

In contrast to what you say, there are frequent positive IDs of shrooms made on this website based only on photographs and descriptions of macroscopic features. These judgements are informed by personal familiarity with the species in question, a familiarity which in some cases allows some degree of certainty without microscopic examination.

I have studied endless collections of coprinoid taxa in herbaria and natural settings in many countries, and have a good feel for the delimitations of these particular species (plicatilis and auricoma). In these mushrooms, particular macroscopic characters corellate well with microscopic ones. That is why I was able to suggest a specific species ID for this notoriously difficult group.

However, as you say, proof requires a microscope.
