Help PICS (Identified! Psilocybe Semiglobata) in alaska
    #1827881 - 08/18/03 08:00 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Found in manure and very slimy to the touch. Cap is has a nipple and is yellow on top fading to a white. The caps appear to be blueing up. The stems are very long pale yellow and some have a twist to them. The gills are a light grey. Some have white gills.(different mushooms?)

They look like some kind of Panaeolus, but I've never seen pans with a viscid cap... dunno. Lets see what the others say.

It'd really help to know what state they were found in. The fact that they were found on dung and are very "slimey" vicid to the touch suggests possibly Ps. semiglobata or a related species. But its impossible to tell with those pics. You say they are bruising blue, are you sure of this?

He is a she thank you! I am unsure of the blueing. It seems to be. Maybe another pic will help. I will get one sent in. I believe that the large cap and the stem behind are showing blue spots or maybe just bruised?

I did check out the Ps. semiglobata and they are not those. The mushrooms I have are very sturdy and the largest is about 5-6in high and the cap was 1 1/2in in diameter.

You should give a more accurate description and you'll probably get a confirmation faster.  Not that i could help you with the id, just seems like a safer, more efficient way of going about this. :smile2:

It is brownish purple. This mushroom is really stumping me! The whole mushroom was very slimy when picked,we had alot of rain lately. The nipple on these were transparent looking and quite prononouced.

Hrmmm... from spore print color and the visicd cap I'd say they *could* be keepers. I really have no clue what species they are though. They look like they belong to the genus Psilocybe but I'm not very sure about that. I'm gonna need some help IDing these guys. LK and MJ seems to be the resident Psilocybe experts, let's see what they say.
Sorry bout calling ya a guy, not too many girls round these parts

Thanks gumbydude and np about the guy thing. I am thinking that maybe they could be keepers too. I am doing another spore print and am going to try to post the pic. They have dried up a bit but remain sticky to the touch. Some have broke down to a slimy gelatous mess.

At least 20. We left some of the smaller ones growing to see what happens. We are going to check on them today.they were also growing out of horse manure not cow if that makes a difference.

Was there any annular zone on the stem at all??? If so was it by chance gellatinous like the rest of the mushroom? Is there a gellatinous pellicle on the cap, like a clear sticky skin that you can peel off the cap?? You can check by gently cracking the cap down the middle but not completely separating the halves, then gently pull apart the halves slowly and see if you see a clear skin starts to stetch. Also try splitting one of the mushrooms down the center length wise so we can get a cross section view and this should also promote a definite bluing reaction in the flesh if they are indeed active. Take some more pics and include the one you split down the center, try and get some specimens of all different stages of growth too.

And don't consume anything till you have an ID.

Kind of an interesting mushroom, maybe a new alaskin Psilocybe

a gellatinous pellicle is definently on all of these. the gellantinous substance goes all the way down the stem. I can't precieve any annulus on them though.
