HPS light fixture wiring help
    #18240407 - 05/09/13 09:23 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

I received these lights and ballasts secondhand for $60, and thats awesome, but i have no clue how to hook up these plugless chords.

the lights are 600w, and the ballasts are rated 600w, 220V.

Couple questions, can I hook up the wires on the lights to the ballasts via butt connectors or do they need to come together with a plug?

the ballasts are 220V, can I run that with a regular 3 prong plug or will i actually have to convert it to run 120? I only plan on having one light on in their own outlets.

the guy I got them from had them wired into his electrical box, and was using a couple 1000w's too so I understand why he cut off all the plugs, kinda

I cant find the brand for the ballasts, and the sunsystem page didn't help much. any help is appreciated.

I would tend to think it needs to be hooked up to 220v power, if it's possible to convert it then it might take more than your level of expertise to do it right. There is a home improvement forum here where you might be more likely to get expert advice on this.

If I'm looking at this right, wouldn't those two strips of metal cause a short circuit?

According to the label, It appears to only work on 220v. Ive seen a couple of these type ballasts way back in the day.

These do not have to be "Hard Wired" You can wire them with a 220v rated plug and hook them to a 220v type outlet. These come in your washer/dryer type outlet or one that looks more like your standard wall outlet.

DO NOT plug this into a 110v/120v outlet! I am not sure if this can be converted to 120v or not.

You can hire an electrician to run a 220v outlet to your grow area relatively cheaply. Say its for a freezer.

At first I had the same thoughts but it looks to go under and through the receptacle, and is not attached to the metal.

Yeah, that looks super dangerous. And as someone that has been "bit" by 220V 25A before, let me tell you, not fun...

I would bring that thing to a professional. I'm sure your nearest hydro store does repairs as well.
