    #1805259 - 08/12/03 11:06 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

spongebob has grown VERY small mushies. i mean the stems are the width of a coffe stirrer and caps the size of a dime...
what am i doing wrong?
standard PF tek was used.
some cased in a verm casing

i created a new batch of jars and used my own recipe..
1/2 cup of superfine verm
1/3 cup BRF
1/2 cup water..
the mixture looks like mud...think it will work???

what you described is a bad mixture. you need more like 1/4 water, 1/4 brf, and 1/2 vermiculite. the object is to saturate the vermiculite and add a layer of brf to the exterior of the verm particles, you have way too much brf and water which is why you get 'muddy' substrate.

small mushies are often caused by low humidity or too low twmperatures. what is your fruiting temperature??

also IMO fine verm works well in the jars but not well for the acsing layer. i use fine in jars and larger verm w/ coir for casing. but fine verm will actually colonize TOO well in ideal conditions and you see overlay. unless its too wet then you will drown or smother the substrate.

when you made the casing, you may ahve spread the colonized substrate layer too thin like i did. i ended up having bonsai sized fruits. like an inch high with stems 2-3 mm thick and caps a cm across.

also for the brf cakes it isnt a good idea to use superfine verm because it will choke the mycelium. try to use medium fine to medium coarse. also the pftek for simple minds on fungifun has good ratios for cakes.

jars definately shudnt look like mud inside.

fruiting temp is right around 70 degrees...
i increased the BRF for more nutrients and added more water to saturate the verm.

IF it does colonize, it will more than likely be very slow and cloudy, not good rhizomorphic strains but a cottonball sort of thing that will take forever to colonize.

i remember the first batch i ever did, was similar to yours mushy and rich with BRF. 90 days wait got me dime to quarter sized mycellium spots at innoculation points and mold took over after that.

dont waste your spores. dump out jars, add 25-50% more verm and refill/PC jars.

the PF tek calls for 2 parts verm:1 part BRF:1 part water.

your mixture is off you should have:1/2 cup ver:1/4 cup BRF:1/4 cup water for each jar
