Morel habitat question

I am confused about something, hopefully somebody can clear this up.
If I find verpa Bohemicas in large numbers in a perticular area is it likely that the habitat will be good for Morchella esculenta? I know of miles of river banks that have cottonwoods nearby, almost too much for me to search out. Should I stick to the areas that have early verpas??
It's getting close to season and I hope somebody has the scoop before I spend every weekend scouting miles and miles of river bank.

Verpas and morels share the same habitats. Also, do not pass up those verpas! I think they taste better than morels and have never been sick nor have I known anyone made sick by them. (someone here may have an experience to share.)

I should also say that I am utterly terrible at finding morels. Maybe my eye glasses prescription will help.

Some people do get sick eating Verpas. I so now many people who do not but its not worth the risk of being one of the people who become poisoned.

I don't pass verpas up at all, I eat them in small quantities though. I found one today growing right up against a recently cut down cottonwood, it still had sawdust on the cap!
I am extremely drawn to riparian morels and I don't know why. I like the flavor but I don't prefer them to be honest. I just HAVE to find them. If I don't I will go bonkers!

I eat verpas too. so does everyone in the mushroom club here.
So I haven't found many riparian morels because after verpas flush the river comes from snow melt . My main verpa hotspot is a cottonwood island which isnt accessible when the water comes up. It may be a morel heaven since no one goes on there at that time!! Guess ill be getting out the hip waders !!

I do not eat verpas and don't recommend it either.(Me personally.) I know you can cook the gyromitrin and other harmful properties out but why? I have never had a desire too eat them. Most of my morels are not found in riparian zones but instead found in disturbed pine forrest habitat like burned area's that are a few years old,or area's that were logged out a couple years ago. Can't wait to post pics of them and their habitat in about two weeks.

One of my books says some people prefer verpas over morels. I've fed them to a few people and my sons eaten some with no Ill effect.
I'm close to riparian habitats but I definitely want to try Burns. Its just a long drive there so its harder to time it right.

I've picked a lot in burns and clear cuts. Usually in large numbers too. It's getting close guys.
It's not that I am out to just get morels, I want the big yellows down by the river more as a accomplishment. Last year it was hardwood boletus edulis, I HAD to find them, after months of scouting territory during the summer, I found a sanctuary....the rains came and there they were!!!! It was a rush like I've never felt. Mission complete sort of thing.

I'm surrounded by riparian areas and that is where I do most of my morel hunting. Every year I find a new spot, but every year I spend hours hiking the riverside finding nothing for hours on end. I've just kind of accepted it as part of the experience.
I find morels in two main locations in riparian areas. The first is on the edge of where vegetation starts all the way up to the tree line. Sometimes I see last chance fruits out in the open, but mostly I find them in slightly protected areas. Under trees( a variety, not just cottonwoods), near downed logs, in tall grasses and near shruby plants.
I also find them in sandy areas further inland near especially large cottonwoods.
Good luck! That's what it takes most of all, luck!

Ahhh! I just read on wiki that gyromitrin is a carcinogen! Eeeeek!
Perhaps I will lay off the verpas.

Thanks dirty, what you described is where I've been finding half frees and verpas. Guess I better stick to it and hope I find some esculentas.
I think I'm going to lay off the verpas as well lol.

Don't morels contain that too? I thought through well ventalated thourough cooking , it was safe to eat. Really how many of you smoke cigs. We only eat verpas for 1-2 weeks a year. And for me probably only once or twice in that time. There's more danger in brushing with toothpaste or dying your hair or for women or kirt hammet wearing make up.

Honestly, verpas just don't seem worth it to me anymore. Why go through all the trouble to detox a mushroom that rarely fruits in huge numbers and doesn't have an exceptional flavor? Not to mention it has questionable edibility.
Seriously, toothpaste?? Come on now! Lol

I quit smoking 12 days ago! I want to murder the entire world!
Yeah, what Psylo said, Morels are slightly toxic too until you cook them. Personally I don't have any reservations about eating Verpas, but I've never tried em before. I've been assured the Verpas around here are tastier than Morels.

Go Gravi!! It is so friggin difficult. More difficult than I thought it would be.
The gum does help. when you are about to freak the ef out you know your body just wants that damn molecule, chew some gum. It really helps.
A tall glass of cold water does the trick too. Really well actually.
Tell us if you eat some verpas.
