Using Electric Blanket to Control Temp?
    #1799357 - 08/10/03 07:23 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Hello all, Im about to order some spores, and grow them (of course). My only prob is temperature may be inconsisten. Its summer here, sometimes hot, but sometimes cool as the air is turned on. I have an electric blanket, and what If I set it to medium/high setting and put my jars in there? Any other ways of keeping temp consistent?

Oh, and Im not sure where im ordering from yet. Where do you all order from? I was thinking sporeworks. Oppinions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
ChopperDave

Like mikey said, heating blanket arent too good, theres some people who have succes with this, by not putting them directly on to the blanket, but near it. Also they tend to have a fluctuating temp, which is bad, Incubators using a heater and water are the way to go.

Any shroomery vendor is good, I dont really like sporeworks to much because i had to wait 1.5 months for my order, while ralphster deliver in a week, I hear The Little Guy has a closeout sale and doubles your order, so you might wanna help him out if you know what i mean

Hey Chopper,

I'm going to have to agree and say dont use an electric heating blanket. This is my first post and I've been pushed to it by a stupid accident on my part. I started with 16 cakes originally. 12 1/2 pint jars and 4 1 pint jars. Innoculated with EQ and Hawaiian 6 and 6 evenly. The jars slowly colonized and took 10 weeks before I birthed my first cake. No incubation or anything. Temps stayed in the low 70s because of air conditioning in the house. 6 jars were lost to contams. Well the first of the 1 pint jars was finishing colonizing and starting to pin 14 weeks after innoculation and had 4 mushrooms already formed inside with about a quarter sized spot on the bottom of the jar uncolonized. I had the jar turned over for about 2 weeks to allow for better C02 exchange. Well long story short, I placed the jar in a heating blanket set on "2" for a day to see if it would speed up the growth to help it finish. Well the next day the blanket didnt feel warm so I turned it up to "3" before I went out to party. When I came back the next day and checked it, the bottom 2 inches of the cake was blue and the mushrooms from inside were all blue/black. The cake also smelled terrible. It truly is an awful smell. I cut off the mushrooms and broke the whole cake up into cranberry juice to sit for a couple of days hoping to salvage it but I'm not too optimistic. I just know that all that blue means goodies in there and I hope to get them out. My advice is stay away from heating blankets because they are too unreliable and uneven in heating. Just be patient. I hope next time it doesnt take me 10-14 weeks for colonization.

I'de suggesting getting the new Koh Samui super strain from http://www.thehawkseye.com/

I've heard of incredible success with it, and perhaps you can be the first person to start a grow log of it

I could see why you wouldn't "buy into" it if it was, lets say B+ super strain, seeing as how B+ is notoriously low in the potency

But at the very least you get a koh samui, which is a very good strain in itself, so I still vote try out that super strain

Just a quick note to Chopper Dave... I really wouldn't reccomend buying sporeworks' (aka sporebank) spores, as I have found them to be of a very poor quality... I would heartily reccommend mush mush
