So i had a cooler full of spawn that i inocculated the second and third week of december via LC clone,MS, and g2g. I had some legal issues arrise so i set aside the project.so now theyre about 3 months old. I took some and cased em 50/50+ and ALL contamined, never had a grow that went so wrong. I still had a bunch of spawn so i scrapped the trays and tried again, they were in wide mouth pints so i decided to leave them whole since the other ones didnt recover from breaking them up for casing very well probably due to senesence. So i took the remainder and dunked and rolled in pasteurized verm w/some hydrated lime and put into a gh. I basically did it this way to minimize contaminates and at least make my effort somewhat worthwile.. My question is has has anyone tried this or have any advice or insight as to what should i expect?

Im well aware of franks threads on dunking before spawning, but i dont see the relevance as i am not spawning to bulk but fruiting the colonized rye grain "cake" whole as if it were brf cake.

Looks like you made an account just to ask this question, welcome to the most magic place on the web. Still waiting to see what happens though, i will update and share when something pops up, or not. There seems to be a lack of information about this topic on the site. Im aware fruiting grains isnt ideal because of low moisture retention but in a past experiment i did i placed a colonized rye grain jar "cake" in a country crock tupperware with plastic wrap over it and it fared well, much better than pf tek in terms of yield. The only real advantage though seems to be its extreme resistance to contams because it is a solid colonized piece and there is no casing or uncolonized substrate for contamination to take hold.

I LOVE FRUITING STRAIGHT GRAINS I'm glad to see someone else giving it a go.
No more "bulk substrates" for me. There are a plethora of reasons why.
*DON'T FLAME ME TIL YOU'VE TRIED IT, PEEPS*
The yield will be about just as good as that exact same amount of grain in a bulk substrate, provided proper watering.
"Bulk" substrates are nutritious, but not very nutritious. That's why you cannot just use JUST "bulk" substrates. They're not food enough to support colonies themselves. Mycelium won't take to it well without the core nutrition of the grain. They're called "bulk substrates" because you can GET them in bulk cheap/free, not because they produce a bulk of mushrooms. They help newbs produce bulks, sure, but mostly because they haven't got the hang of working with the organism, supplying its water needs etc. So, the methods developed for newbs are made to get-around the inadequacies and still produce result.
However, the advantages of this approach are: Small amount of casing to treat, instead of large amount of substrate No grain-fed colonizing run on substrate in unsterile environs Contams are isolated without tossing the whole batch Contams are hardly a worry at all really. It's much easier to have sterile inocs of the containers than an as-clean-as-possible foray with monotub prep. After a flush, the containers can be bottom-watered for them to pull hydration up for the next round, instead of a wily "dunk" Less airflow requirement! This is a big one. Peeps don't realize how much breathing they have going on in their monotubs after expanding mycelium all-over the low-nute sub. The success of tubcake grows is not necessarily a testament to grower skill but to the hardiness of Cubensis and its drive to fruit in whatever conditions it finds itself. IMO, the fruits are nicer too… As in more potent (strain is the main variable though), but I'm not exactly able to provide chroma data sheet on that. Find out for yourselves.
It's not so much that grains hold less water, but that they lose it more easily. Water holding is not a problem, just water retaining. This is why it's good to case the large grains. An exposed surface of grains has lots of open surface area, and exposes to space between the grains further. So, rye grain, birdseed, and corn in particular will lose water way easily and benefit immensely from casing. With that casing, they're as good as any other substrate, and I would contend that they're better as they contain much more nutrition, thus providing water to that "core" allows it to do the same as it would in a bulk substrate since that food isn't fueling the stretch over the bulk sub.
I have amazing results using grass seed for my fruiting grains. The seeds themselves hold less water individually, of course, but there are a ton more per sq. in. and the mycelium grows dense and thick amongst them, and become capable of holding much more water.
